I have been trying on/off for 3 months to get my "brand new" (new to me) 49 B running smoothly. I have tuned it up, adjusted or set about every screw or lever that can be set or adjusted. I have gotten alot of input from you guys in doing this, and I am thankful. But, it still is having the same problem, and that is it sputters, coughs when putting a load on the engine. My AC has a Marvel Schleber carb. I am at the end of my rope now. So, I'm asking once again for some direction. Before you go an tell me to check the timing, I have. It's all set (bought a timing light) now. It was off a little bit, but it still runs the same (poorly). I have adjusted the carb a hundred times. It also now has new spark plug wires (old ones didn't look too old actually). I have replaced all the other ignition parts too (points, rotor, condensor, etc..). Carb has been cleaned twice. Tank has been cleaned/drained. New manifold gasket was put on.

Questions:

Manifold - Could a bad manifold cause the symptoms I'm having? I don't see any leaks, but did prior to putting a new gasket on. I did repair some pin holes in the manifold when I replaced the gasket. (JB weld).

Carb - Some of you have cursed the MS carb. I'm not even sure if my carb belongs on this tractor because I see no model stamping on it. Plus, mine has 2 adjustment screws and a B I saw at the fair last week only had one screw on it's MS carb. Most of you said you have Zenith carbs. At one time Sandy Lake had a rebuilt one avail. I just want to make sure I've done all I can before I plunk down $185 and hope it's the problem.

Once again, I am grateful for the help you all have given. But, unless I can figure this out myself and actually use this tractor for the first time (that's right, haven't been able to use it), I may be forced to take it in to have it fixed (perish the thought).

$185 to rebuild a carb??? Call Motec Engineering 765-963-6628. They can make your carb work and look like new for $50.00

No, that was for a actual carb, that's been rebuilt. I have a MS carb, and was considering getting a Zenith carb. I belive I can get a rebuilt kit for mine for about $12. Just haven't done it yet cause I don't see that a rebuild kit will fix my problem. I may be wrong, but we'll try the new manifold first. I do know my current manifold is questionable.

I would like to be the frist to tell you that I knew the new manifold wouldn't help.

There is more to rebuilting a carb than a new kit. You must make sure that all of the air holes are open. Your marvel schebler carb should work as good as any zenith if it is cleaned good. If it was my tractor, I would check the carb, then the valves. I would make a air fitting to go in the spark plug hole. Put about 30 psi in the cylinder and listen for air leaking out the manifolds. A sure sign of leaking valves.

Good Luck

Would a compression check do the same thing, or prove anything?

When I did my compression check, all cylinders were from 107-120 lbs. I would think that was a good reading. My VW's only usually read 60-80lbs.
Is there a guideline for compression on a B model?

I would think that I wouldn't have this good of compression if I had a valve leak or rings going bad.

Carb has been cleaned, and cleaned and cleaned. All holes are open. Unless there is some mystery hole that I don't see or know about. I haven't bought a rebuild kit yet for it, (just cleaned it). The first time I cleaned it, there wasn't any garbage or debris in the carb at all. Not even any gummy buildup.

Mine's a 49, so I don't have a magneto. I'll check for how close the condensor is to the coil. Not being close to it here at work :-), I think my condensor sits fairly close to the coil.

Thanks. Matt

Sounds to me as if you need to replace the manifold.

Matt,
There could be a leak internal to the manifold between the intake and exhaust. This will lean out the mixture causing a stumble or miss. The only sure way to find out is to replace the manifold. This will be more expensive than the carburetor, probably in the $125 range.
I suppose you could remove the manifold and block off one side, intake or exhaust, and pressurize it to see if it leaks.

Phil,

How is that more expensive than a carb? SandyLake Imp. has a rebuilt Zenith for $185, and I thought that was about average. Do you know of another source for rebuilt carbs cheaper than the manifold price of $125? If so, please let me know.

My next step probably is the manifold, since I know it's probably questionable based on how it looked when I pulled it this spring.

Matt

Is there someone you know with a tractor like yours you could switch carbs with to see if yours is the problem? Or other parts too until you find the problem? Maybe someone you get to talking with at a show?

I've thought of that, but unfortunately, I"m new to this area and haven't seen any other B's close by. I have seen some somewhat nearby, but just hasn't been the time or able to do what you mention. The one at the fair was my first time to see another B close up. The owner wasn't around.

OK. How do I go about confirming that and trying to fix it?

Matt, The shaft in the governor housing could have a groove worn in it that could be causing the carb not to respond right when a load is placed on the tractor. Could be the weights hanging up. Make sure the governor housing is getting oil. Might be the carb. What do the spark plugs look like after it has been put under a load for a while? They may point you in a direction. (Just some ideas!) Dale

Try running it without the governor hooked up. Have a spring to close the throttle, and pull it open with a string or wire. Be carefull not to over rev.
