My friend has an AC that he knows nothing about. He thinks it is an 1948 "C" , but isn't sure. We found a number on the engine that says:

BE58811G (possibly 7's instead of 1's)

He wants to restore it and show it, so if anyone can help us figure out what it is, we would greatly appreciate it! Thanks!

Nathan; The BE series engine was used on the B model tractors. However, engine swaps were common among B's and C's, A "B" model will more than likely be a wide front, check also the transmission #. B's will always begin with a "B" suffix,ie, B356423, "C" models with C, CA's with CA, etc. This number will be located just forward of the gear shift on a flat just right of center.
If your tractor is a narrow front and the trans # begins with a "C", it is probably a C model with a B model engine. As I said,this sort of engine swap was common years ago. Regards J.L.

the BE engine probably means it is a "B" tractor. It should be a wide front end, probably a wishbone type axle, that is most common. Does it have a starter and battery? It may have a hydraulic valve/pump out back above the pto shaft. Some of this stuff was optional. Engine is a 4 cylinder and should have a magneto ignition. Does not need the battery to run. Battery is for the starter only. Will have a 6 volt generator if original and battery equiped.

The tractor number is stamped into the metal just in front of the shifter. just above where it says Tractor No. A little sandind and some spit will make it stand out so you can read it. Starts with a letter which is your model.Easy as that!

That looks like an engine no. and as it starts with BE it would have been made between 1938 and 1942.Serial nos. for the BE engine went from 101 to 61,400. The tractor serial no. is on the transmission housing near the shift lever. From looking at your no. this engine was near the end of the BE production run. and the G at the end means it was a gas engine.
