My AC has a WD-45 sticker on it, but the guy who gave the tractor was not entirely sure that it is a 45. How can I positively tell the difference betwee a 45 and a WD? Help!

Some easy ways to rule out a WD45 (for the most part), a WD engine block has a steel plate on the right (distributor) side, a WD45 is solid cast iron. The WD has a straight shifter lever, the 45 has a curved one. The only problem with those 2 ways is that AC used some WD45 enigne and trannies in the later WD's. The best way to tell is the serial number, which is located on the left rear brake housing, above the spring hole. Aaron

The WD will have the plate on the right side of the tractor and will have a curved shifter. The later WD's had WD-45 trannies in them.

I have a curved gear shift lever and a steel plate on the side of the engine! Where is the serial number for a WD? There is a number on the brake housing, but it does not match up with any of the serial numbers that I have seen listed for a WD 45.

Some WDs had curved shift levers, as they were changing over they came along before the 45 engine. The serial no is on the back of the differential housing, behind the left brake, on the machined surface. You may have to scrape some paint to find it. Some of the axle housings have the date they were cast cast into them too. The big difference between a 45 and WD is about9hp.

Tom and Phil,
The curved shift lever started at WD #127008 in 1952. Duey
