Ca steering shaft

I think I'm going to try to repair the splined cross shaft in my Ross steering box. I can get new bushings and seal at the bearing supply house. The price of the new shaft is $330.00 at the Allis dealer and a good used shaft is probably non existent. The shaft body itself is worn down where it rides on the bushings and I was thinking of building it up with weld and have a machine shop friend turn it back down to size in a lathe. one of the round teeth that engages the worm is in good shape but the other is worn considerably. I was thinking of welding it back up and shaping it with a file or sander. Does anyone see any reason why this won't work or have any other suggestions? Dick L., what do you think of this? The cross shaft has drilled centers at both ends, it should be an easy task to build up and remachine the shaft. The teeth could be welded up as well, however Roger VanCamp sells the replacement teeth of a hardened steel. You have to drill out the old teeth and insert the new teeth.
