All, I have a Model C with a Woods belly mower. This tractor has been setting out in a field for a couple of years, uncovered. I'm afraid water may have gotten down the intake/exhaust. It had ignition problems prior to this. What's the best way to attack this; treat it like a frozen motor or anything else ?? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Tom,this happened to my C, when I was a kid we stopped using it when the front seal blew and it sat in the hedgerow for several years and was forgotten. My dad covered the exhaust with a can but this can eventually rusted through after the tarp desentegrated. water got down into the number 4 and 2 cylinders 4 was at the bottom of its stroke and filled right up over the winter it froze and heaved the cylinder liner right into the water jacket, the number 2 cylinder was almost at the top and was barely wet at some point my Dad tried to break it loose after several years by pulling it around and releasing the clutch.I think the crank moved but a few valves were stuck and he bent 2 push rods into pretzels.The exhaust manifold also fell apart from rust and the brake bands rusted onto the drums. If you have any doubts about its condition I would pull the head and take a good look inside just to be safe. I am in the process of rebuilding the engine right now and hope to finish it up after hay season. This was the first tractor we had on our place and I have a lot of memories of cultivating with Old Allis as a kid.Hope this helped T.J.

I would do just like he said but instead of prying on the ring gear, jack one rear wheel up and put the tractor in 3rd gear and rock it back and forth.

Bart,
Pull it up to your work area (makes it easier to work on) and drain the crankcase to remove any water that may have gotten into the engine. Try to turn the engine over with the hand crank or, if you don't have a crank, pull the starter and use a crowbar on the flywheel gear. If the engine won't turn over, you'll have to try various potions like PB Blaster, Gibbs or Kroil in each cylinder to unstick the rusted rings. Be aware that the valves may also be stuck. Remove the rocker arm cover and rocker assemby and try moving each valve. The ones that are stuck will be obvious. Once you get the engine loose, replace the oil and filter, drain and refill the gas and give it a try. You might be pleasantly surprised. Since you said you had ignition problems though, you'll probably have to get these worked out to get it started.
After the engine is running, I would drain and refill the transmission/hydraulics. Water gets in everything on a tractor that sits out uncovered.
