Carb float re-hab,,,,

I have a car. float that is made of copper, I think, and is about 1/3 gone (eaten away). Is there a trick you guys know to rebuild this one or some one that is capable of making a replacement?. I thought of turning a wooden one on my lathe ( the shape of it is totally round) and coating it with something to make it more bouant/ What do ya think of that?<<<

If you can find a round piece of cork very close to the same size, it will work after painting with several coats of model airplane dope.

You can get new ones in major re-build kits. They don't cost that much.

My post was mistyped instead of car. float I meant carb float. This thing is out of a roto tiller made in Switzerland many many years ago by Simar Geneve. No parts available that I know of. Would epoxy and wire sreen repair the damaged areas you think? Mike

Since it's out of a tiller, I would think it would be fairly small. I would try to find a float out of a car carb made out of the foam stuff they use and whittle it down to the size of your float. A 2100/2150 Ford carb has a float that is about 3" long by 1" wide and 1 1/2" high. If it is too large for this, you could get a float out of a gas tank(late 80's Escorts have a large brick of a float about 3/4" thick, 2" wide and 4" long -- I had to graft one on my F-350's sending unit recently) You could then cut off the attachments, ie. hinge and tang and epoxy them to the foam. Anything you do to the old float you have will add weight to it and will keep it from working right. Even though it is metal is is very thin. The float in my pickup had fatigue cracks in it just from sloshing around in the tank, so you know how thin it was.
