Sounding dumb and not knowing a thing about Allis Chalmers WD's ,but what is a traction booster on a WD? Because the WD I'm looking at has one of these. Also I was wondering, what is a common base line price for one of these tractors? The dealer's asking $2000. The condition is alright. He says it starts up easy, and runs good. But the dealer always says that. Tin is good, tires are fair, traction booster is disconnected, engine leaks oil, hydraulic pump leaks, block heater, no fenders, no belt pulley, hydraulic steering. I would like to get an idea of what price to start jewing with. Any reply would be great.thanks!

Way overpriced for the WD! About half that would do. Traction booster has the drawbar linked to the hyd system and, depending on where you put the hyd lift lever, when it senses the pull on the drawbar, through a mechanical link, it will shift some of the weight of the mounted implement to the rear wheels. Works like a champ with mounted plows. The WD will out pull about anything near it's class when working traction boost. If they say the tractor in question has the TB disabled, then probably the linkage is missing or disconnected. I myself would stay away from that one.

I paid $1200 for mine in similar condition, mine is a wide front. Bought it at an auction.

That WD is way overpriced! In Southwest MO it would sell for about $600 from an individual. Like others have said, dealers always ask more. I would recommend you keep looking.

I would say that price is way high for the tractor you describe. Part of the problem is buying from a dealer. It would be easy to find a belt pulley cause most people took them off and put em in the shed. You can also find fenders for them but it would be nice if you could buy new ones. The hydraulic pump could probably use a rebuild to stop the oil leaks.
I bought a 1949 WD narrow front in 92 for $600, but a lot of little things that needed to be done added up.
I would say keep looking.

Plow Man, I have a WD and absolutely LOVE it. But that price seems high. I paid $1750 for mine. The paint is great. It was sandblasted and primed; not painted with a shop broom. Actually was great, when I put my loader on, it chipped quite a few spots. Mine has a narrow front. Tires were in good condition, but unloaded. Runs great in winter and summer. Strarter never turns 4 times. I thought I paid a bit much, but I live in Southeast Michigan where everything is double. But I do not for a second regret my purchase. Mine has a three point hitch, and came with a new 6 foot rear blade.

$2000 sounds a little high as you described the tractor. A basically complete tractor should start at about $1500 in this area, add for wide front, add for better paint, tires and condition. The tractor's traction booster was the WD equivalent of the modern draft control. The only reason you would need it is if you are pulling a load (plowing or discing) and it wouldn't have any effect if not used with snap coupler implements that have the proper hookups. I think I would stay away from that one with out a significant price adjustment. John

Plow Man,

The traction booster is a neet thing the folks at AC came up with. When the tires of the tractor begin to slip the traction booster kicks in inching the implement your pulling forward...theoretically reducing slip or getting the tractor stuck. I say theoretcially because some folks have told me that it really doesnt work. I beg to differ! My WD 45 is equipped with a traction booster gauge. While plowing, if my tires begin to slip, the gauge spikes and I keep going. Seems to work quite nicely for me! (The mechanics of how it works is another question???)

As for that dealer...At that price I'd have to tell the man to go flour his nuts. I've seen decently restored wide fronts go for less than that ($1900). (A wide front seems to make a huge difference in price.) From what you are describing, I personally would start at about $600-$800 depending on a few other things (check previous posts). There a a lot of WD's out there, so dont feel bad if you pass on this one. Great tractor though! I'll be interested to see what some of the other folks have to say about this one.

"theoretically" eh?, Steve the next time one of those 'sperts tells ya that the traction boost system doesn't do a thing, ask them what color tractors they have in the barn. Give ya 5-1 odds it's a JD guy. Seriously, untill the D series came out the traction booster system required a little more than a 50 IQ to operate. Read the proper valve setting proceedure on the battery box decal of a '45, 50% of the people that farmed with WDs and 45s never touched the settings on the hydrulic valve becase they coudn't figure it out. I remember one of our nieghbors spun out going up a hill pulling a big fertilizer spreader, and he kept screwing around with the TB on his '45 trying to get over the hump. He said "I didn't think the damned TB system ever did anything" "now I can show you it doesn't". He didn't understand the system needless to say. The traction booster only works with mounted or semi-mounted implements. As John stated, it's like the modern draft control on 3 point hitches. It does not know how much the tires are slipping, it senses the pull on the snap coupler and will provide lift at any given load, the amount of lift depends on where the operator has the TB lever (or the lift lever on WDs & 45s) It's best use was when plowing although it could be used with A-C mounted or semi-mounted disks. When the plows are in good shape, meaning the points, landsides, and heal are in good shape the TB system does not lift the plow out of the ground to keep things moving as is commonly believed, it uses the "suck" of the plow along with transfering weight from the front end to add weight to the rear tires. Some of the old A-C promotional films are availible over at the Unofficial Allis page. One of them explains the whole Traction Booster system a whole lot better than I can, but I can assure you of one thing. It does work.
