WD-45 fouling spark plug problems?

Help! Does anyone have any idea why my spark plugs begin to foul on my WD-45 only after a few hours of use? I have new points and condensor, and it doesn't seem to matter. The unit burns alittle oil, but I've seen alot worse and not have this problem. My spark gap is set @ 0.030, which is according to spec. Any suggestions?

I've been using Champions in my WD for years with no fouling problems - don't know the plug number, but could look if you are interested. I would check the carb adjustments, since oil consumption is not a factor. A hotter plug will burn off the residue thus making it longer between foulings, but unless you are running plugs that are extremely cold, the source of the problem lies elsewhere. My $0.02

If changing plugs doesnt' solve the problem here's something worth checking. I had what I thought was the same problem. I went to autolites and even upped the gap...no avail. After a short time of working the tractor hard (plowing) it started back-fireing then all but stalled at high rpm's. The problem turned out to be that the spark advancing weights inside the distributor were not working freely. Cleaned and lubed em...problem solved!

for what its worth,my experience has always been to use any plug except champian.they just dont work for me.try autolight,good plugs.use a little hotter one than it calls for.

Just got off the phone with Norm at Norm's Toys and he said the same about the Champions. Use the AC's instead.

Steve,
Try plugs a couple of heat ranges hotter than standard. Check the chart below to cross reference brands if your parts man can't find what you need.
Also, check the adjustments on the carb to be sure the fouling isn't from excessive fuel.

Try gapping it to .035 or even .040. If that doesn't help, go to a hotter plug. Specs call for:

Size 14 mm
Point Gap .028" to .032"

Heat Range

Heavy Loads Autolite AN 7 AC 45 Champion J-8

Light Loads Autolite A 11 AC 47 Champion J-11

(I beleive the light loads call for the hotter plugs.)

You didn't mention what weight oil you use in the engine. I beleive the specs call for a straight 30 weight non-detergent in summer but I use a modern 15W-40. You could even go to a 20W-50. A thicker oil may slow the fouling down slightly.

Note: A lot of discussion here on the pros and cons of using modern detergent oils in these old tractors. I figure, unless you bought the tractor from an enthusist, it probably has modern detergent oil in it now anyway.
