I purchased what was beening advertized as a 1957 WD45 tractor. Bought it via the inter-net. What it ended up being is a 1949 WD With break rod that was broken, one rim shot, wrong carburator, missing battery box and two different size tires on the back. None of this was mentioned in phone coversations or could not be seen in Photos. Actually bought two tractors, other tractor althought not as good as discribed, at least I got the tractor (model) I thought I was purchasing.

The person I purchased the tractors from agreed to pay for the rusted out rim. That was before I relized it was a WD, not a 45. Guys what would you do in this situation? Should I ask for my money back? What about the transportation costs? or do I shut up!

Looking for honest feed back.

thanks to all who respond.

You mean you didn't get the serial numbers and check them out before sending any money???? How are you going to know what you are buying with out checking out the serial numbers first?? If you had done that, at least when you got them, you could make sure you got what you paid for. The serial numbers should always be on the bill of sale too. Robert

CAVEAT EMPTOR - Let the buyer beware. I almost bought a B Allis that way. Doing a bunch of calls, research, and e-mails, really helps. Even if you irritate the seller. There are ALWAYS other beautiful ORANGE tractors out there to own. I try to be very careful when purchasing one. :) Maybe you can build a nice one with the parts you have. Don't sweat it though. I'm sure some others of us have been burned in a similar way, too, Dave.

I don't think that you got took to bad! I have been screwed that way before, when I bought a 1937 WC with out looking. It didn't turn out to bad because I fixed the crack and repaired the mag. But the price was right. You should be able to combine the tractors to make one good one and have some parts to sell.
Glad to help!

Well you didn't say how much you paid for the tractors. You may stillhave gotten a good deal. Having a 45, even if it is a parts tractor isn't so bad either. You may be able to rebuild the 45 stuff and combine it with the WD stuff and end up with a nice 45. You need the factory owners manuals and Service Manual. Get it from King's Books PO Box 86 Radnor, Ohio 43066-0086. These are good quality and not expensive, about 20 dollars for the two of them if I remember. Will help you a lot. The 45 engine and transmission are the major differences. Did you get a wide front end? worth more as there was less of them.

Oh, the hand clutch has 5 plates on the 45 , 3 on the WD, which makes the 45 clutch better.

Tom, actually, the 3 plate clutch replaced the 2 plate clutch with tractor ser.#WD165056 which is fairly early in '54 (after 19,000+ WD-45s had been built. I assume the extra torque of the 226 engine was found to be too much for the 2 plate clutch.

Yes, you got kinda' reamed. On the other hand, the stuff that's broken on the WD is not too hard to fix and it's still a great tractor. You may be able to swap enough parts to get the 45 running and looking the way you want.

By the way, look up "ROG'S" post on Allis Chalmers.com if you want to see the array of responses questions like yours can receive. I'd imagine that some will say that you should never buy a tractor you haven't thoroughly inspected. If you do, you're taking a giant leap of faith!!!

(or to put it like some of those people: What's wrong with you? What do you expect. These are 50 year old tractors, not new ones; welcome to the school of hard knocks, blah blah blah) You could post the seller's name to help inform the rest of us, but if you do that: WATCH OUT!!! It gets ugly!

You live and learn, right? Good luck. RC

PS: There are 2 sides to every story. Until we hear the seller's side and let Doctor and world- reknowned scientist WSM collate the data and render his hypothesis, nothing you or I say matters anyway!

I usually write an e-mail to the seller every night with more questions. they probably think i'm a real pain, but it helps to get a good picture in your mind of what you are getting. I doubt you can get your money back. just look at it as a learing experience. I once asked an old AC guy the same question you asked when i had purchase an old tractor. His comment was, "son, as long as its orange you did alright".

Neighbor bought a "WD" without looking at it. Seller delivered the tractor when he wasn't home. Rolls it into his shop to being restoration and discovers no hydraulics on the tractor and calls to ask if wd's ever came without hyd. told him no and went to look at it. Turns out to be a WC. Finished the resto. traded for Excellent original WD.

At least you got something. I ordered parts for my AC-G from a couple in Benton Harbor MI. Sent the money and never got the parts.
