B timing problems

I have a 1942 B with a mag the problem is that it runs but I can't get it to time right if you pull the mag all the way away from the block then you can just get the "fire" mark in the bottom of the hole the mag is timed by the book as far as the beveled gear and the "C" can anyone help??

Your mag drive gear is out of time with the cam gear. Sounds like one notch. Duey

Here is a little trick I used on my son's B when I had the same problem. I opened the point gap about 005 over the book setting. This will make it spark sooner because the points are opening sooner. It saved having to pull it back apart after it was just painted and the mag doesn't seem to care about the extra gap. Make sure you don't open them up too far or they won't close and you won't have spark. To fix your problem the right way you need to advance the governor gear 1 tooth. One more thing. After I got the timing exactly right, I couldn't tell a bit of difference in starting or running from before. Next time I would leave it alone and not worry about the timing being of a touch.
