How rare are the adjustable wide front ends on a B?? I have found a later model with adjustable wide front and was curious if it had value above the regular non adjustable wide fronts.

Also...did the later Bs have more horsepower than the early Bs?

Also did Allis Chalmers change from magneto to battery ignition at some point? If so, when?

Thanks for the help..I am a novice when it comes to A-C machines.

Regards...BB

Bama. According to the Parts Book, the B had magneto ignition priior to SNB123996 and IB2836, and battery ignition/distributor on tractors with those numbers and later.

I've got a 1947 B with factory battery ignition so they must have switched at least by then.

The Allis B was originally about 16 HP; during WWII they switched to using the same engine as the C, which brought the machine up to about 22 HP.

BB,
What you're seeing is a B with the front axle from either an A or a C/Super C. The B was never offered with an adjustable wide front axle.
One of my neighbors has a B like this. He uses it for spraying and other light chores. Looks pretty neat.

Oops! Got confused as to which discussion board I was on.
Of course the B was offered with the adjustable front axle. I've got one, a '40 model. A neighbor also has one, another '40 model. I don't think they were all that rare since I know where two others are in my part of Texas and I see them at shows all the time.

Hey Phil...I know I'm not supposed to be on the A-C Boards but somebody forgot to lock the door to keep us red types out. Thanks for all the info. I'm badly in need of a project and this little B sounds like fun, but we are also in the process of trying to buy a bigger house. My Super H continues to drain the tractor cofers also, so I don't know if I'll get it or not.

Take care...BB

Don't be do'en that to us again Phil, I am use to reading your posts and putting your word in the bank.(LOL!) We attended a couple big A-C shows over the past few weeks and I found out that A-C made three different types of wide fronts on Bs. The late ones had a square tube axle similar to the C setup, these tractors also had dish rear wheels like a C. There were two different earlier ones that had an arch type axle like a regular B but the spindles were mounted on a round shaft that could be slide in or out for limited adjustment (about 12" I guess). This info came from a nice old gent at the Penfield Ill show who had purchased all three versions new. He led me around a couple rows of tractors to show all three styles, guess I never paid much attention before.

You're right, Butch. I completely forgot about the adjustable arched front end. I don't think I've ever seen one of those, though. There aren't a lot of A-C tractors in this part of Texas, unfortunately.
I'll try not to make that kind of mistake again. Yesterday just wasn't my day. :o)

Fer a minute there, I thought you was chewin' what you shulda bin plowin'. ;-)

Yeah, my book shows the wide front too, but I like the wish bone better.

Allis did switch to battery ignition at some point and it's certainly able to retro-fit to a "B." I'm not sure when they switched or if it was ever applied to the "B" models. I have a CA with battery ignition and it's the same engine as the B.

I had a 1948 C and it had a distributor with battery and starter. I had a 1948 B and it had a magneto ignition, also battery and starter.

base price is about $1500 if it runs o.k. WIth good tires you can add close to $500. WIth new paint, complete, you can add almost that again. Top price with mower is $2500.
