Which is the best for restoring a B, C, or CA

Assuming that you have found a B, C, and a CA and all are in the same good restorable condition...Which would be the most desirable to spend the time and effort to restore and which would be the least expensive to restore? Thanks in advance for your replies.

Thanks for all of your comments. We looked for a B at first but just couldn't find one that we liked. They were all either too far away, too far gone to restore, or restored. Just could not find one in the middle. We finally setteled on a complete CA that we found locally, but it will need an engine overhaul or replacement. What drew us to it was it's completeness and the minor amount of rust. Again, thanks for the comments.

By all the replies I guess everybody is pretty happy with the tractor that they have! I guess it is up to you to decide what you want to do with your finished machine.I would say buy the best tractor that you can find as a cheap basket case rarely ends up being cheap in the end.As far as Ca's go there have been a lot of times that I would have really liked to have the hand clutch so my implements could keep spinning while going slow because as soon as you push in the pedal everything stops moving on a C. I have a 1952 CA and it is a really nice neat tractor with easy starting and good for working.
My opinion is that the CA is the best (because I have one) and because it has more power. Also I like the front end better on a CA. But this is just my opinion.

I have a "B" machine wich is I believe one of the oldest around. The ngine is nice sized for small operations If I had a choice I would have Hydraulics put on or if you can get a "CA" get one Either way there all good machines but, with all machines; they have limitations. One thing I highly recomend is getting all the manuals you can find.

We use 2 C's on our place and they are a great machine, but I have a friend with a B and its pretty neat. Around here CA's bring almost as much as a WD45 and are a little scarce. As long as they are in comparable shape they should all cost about the same to restore as long as you don't have to dive into the transmissions and drives because then a CA would be a little more expensive.One thing that is nice about the B and C is their bench seat for giving the grandkids or your wife a ride around the yard or in a parade. One thing to consider is that a B will fit on a smaller trailer than a C and will take up less room in the garage or shed.Also try and find one with electric starting as it is a nice feature, T.J.

the B is the littlest and in the midwest seems to be the more expensive. I think some of that is because it is a wide front axle. the C is by far the cheapest around here and most plentiful, if you like the narrow front ends. the CA is probably the best if you want a slightly heavier tractor with a little more power and the clutch-axle. also CA would be best for small farm use. B is more of a collectors item.

Steve, Thanks for your comments...We are, as you may have gathered, novices at this and we just don't want to make the mistake of picking the wrong tractor to restore and realize the mistake later. From your comments, and as we are not looking for a "working" tractor, the "B" would appear to be the best choice.

Orin,
There is no "wrong" tractor to restore. The B would probably be the best choice for you, based on the size and simplicity of construction. However, the C is really the same basic tractor as the B, it just has different rear axles and housings and front ends (unless the B and C both have the adjustable front axle). The CA is simply a C with some modifications (different transmission, hydraulics and the clutch in the right hand axle). The same CE125 engine was used in the late B, the C and the CA. The CA has a bit more HP due to changes in the governed speed.

I think that as long as you have the space to keep them and the time and money to restore them that you would be best served by getting them all! :o)
