All-metal wheels/tires for WD?

Hello. This might sound strange, but is it possible to get metal wheels/tires that would fit an AC WD? This is a 1948 model.

The reason I ask this odd question: I am clearing some pasture land that is in danger of becoming completely grown over. It hasn't been mowed in years. There are many, many thorn trees (popular here in Georgia) and I can only get about an hour's use out of my front tires before they fill with thorns and go flat. At about $15 a pop for a fix and new tube, this is getting old in a hurry.

I've seen people put steel-belted radials on tractors to solve this problem, and it helps some, but that won't work on this one because it's a narrow front tractor.

So I thought about having a set of metal tires that I could use only when I find myself cutting over land that has so many thorn trees that will make my rubber tires go flat. I know tractors had metal wheels/tires exclusively back in the 1920s and earlier, but is there anything like that around that would fit a 1948 AC? There's a great old tractor junkyard not far from here that I could check out.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Tim

Tim,

Where I work, we have a bunch of rubber tire Case backhoes. Our guys always seemed to find nails, spikes, whatever which attributed to flat front tires. After many flat repairs, my Goodyear rep turned me on to "foam filled" tires. Since I had this done, we haven't had a flat since! That's been 5 years ago! Two drawbacks to foam filling though, once the tires are wore out, you have to throw-out the wheels as well as the tires. Second, it's not cheap to foam fill. Because we have quite a few machines, it was a tremendous savings for us. Just food for thought. Steve B.

Miller Tire can order you a hard core flap that goes between the tube & tire tostop flats. Ph 419-335-7010

Tim,
A friend told me about this trick. Find a couple of old car/truck tires that will fit over your front tires. Put them on and let them flop around. They will prevent the thorns from penetrating your tubes. Another alternative is airplane tires. There's an outfit out of Houston that sells them used and they are about 12-24 ply. Thorns can't penetrate them. They won't be as cheap as the first option, but they'll look better. Finally found the company name, it's GENSCO. No phone number was given in the message I got from a friend.

Good luck,
Phil

Tim I am not postive about this but I think the steel front hubs and bearings from the older wc will fit on your wd if not then you will have to change the whole front end assembly
