Wd 45 shuts down after hour of mowing

wd spits and back fires and shuts down after mowing with hay bine after about three four rounds on field, if you wait ten min. it will fire back up for about half hour then it does it again. New plugs, wires, magneto, cleaned gas tank, carb rebuilt last season, just have straight pipe in place of muffler, would that do anything....please help hay needs done and its the only tractor I have to do it with

Make sure the vent to the fuel tank is working, in the cap to the tank. If it is blocked I have seen an engine die from lack of fuel, the gas can't run out if air can't get in. Could cause you to be running lean or out of fuel after the vacume in the tank built up.

My WD did the same trick. When it would cool it would start fine and run with no problems for a while. Then it would begin to miss and then pop and backfire. I had put a new coil and condensor on it earlier. Amish friend came and fixed it in about 2 minutes. Took off cap and re-gapped points. They were too close and when they got hot they would stick together. The rotor also had a rust spot on it. He used very fine sand paper between points to clean them and then put some grease on rotor. Points were not hard to reset. Loosen screw that holds them and simply move them apart a little. She runs pretty good now.

glenna, The fact you say that the engine spits and backfires is an indication that the problem is electrical in nature. I would suspect the condenser or the coil. I would go for the coil first. Good luck. Dave

If Dick's and Duey's suggestions don't pan out, try replacing the condenser. These things can make one pull their hair out.

The coil or condensor will act this way when they are going bad. They short out after getting warmed up and will be ok again after they cool down. Dick is also correct about the fuel sediment bowl assembly could be partly blocked. To check this you have to remove it from the tank. Before doing this, try removing just the bowl, turning on the fuel to see if you get a good flow from the tank. Duey

The only problem you will have with a straight pipe is that it will set dry hay on fire if it backfiresand or shoots sparks under load. The only thing I see that you have not stated that you checked was the sediment bowl and shutoff. If it does not have a stand pipe up into the tank, fines can build up in the intake and shutoff valve of the seditment bowl assembly. I would guess that your problem is with a loss of fuel flow somewhere. If you can run an extra round idleing it down some or if it will set and idle all day, you would be sure that you have a partially pluged fuel system.

When you rebuilt the carb, did you bend the fuel line away fromits original position ? This could cause the fuel to vapor lock once the tractor got good and hot. Make sure the line is not too close to any part of the hot engine.
