Wd misses and backfires

MY 1949 WD starts and runs good when cold but after engine has warmed up a bit it misses and backfires after clutch is pushed in. If I get going again quickly (under ten seconds) and keep a load on the tractor (bush hoging 8foot tall canary grass) it seems to run ok. If I let tractor idle or take to load off of the engine for more than 15 seconds it starts to miss and backfire severely. Once it is missing that much it will miss until shut off and let cool down. #1 spark plug is wet with oil after missing. Ignition system is in good condition and timing is correct, any other ideas?

Just a thought thats off subject. Canarygrass makes good hay if you can cut and bale when it's under 3 feet tall. I bale it every year. I had it protein tested once. Tested 18%. Makes good feed for any animal that eats hay. I sell every bale I can make mostly to horse people.

Mark, Any number of things can cause a miss, but if it backfires it is usually elecrical. Don't overlook the disributor cap. It could have a hairline crack which is sometimes hard to see. This could account for #1 plug being wet. This is an indication that it is missfiring. Good luck. Dave

Mark,
You might check your valve clearence if the other suggestions don't work. Coil and condensor shorting out when hot, usually take a cool down period of an hour before you can start up again. Also a partly plugged fuel sedement bowl could be the problem or a leaking manifold gasket!!! Duey

It may be flooding out. Several things to check. power jet screw open to much, idle air mixture out of adjustment, or both out of adjustment, float set to high. If it runs good under load most likly you will find your problem in the carb but won't hurt to check the point gap. I have seen some weird problems when the points start to slip closed.

I had this happen to me one time, when I found it -the manafold (exhaust) was pluged with carbon. I built a fire with oak wood put the manifold in the coals till it was all red took it out let the red color go away held it up & pecked on it gentel,most all of the carbon fell out cover it with dry sand as soon as you can as this is cast and needs to cool even to avoid cracking

hope this helps also a new condensor can be bad
