WD-45 pto bolt snapping

I have a WD-45. The bolt that connects the pto shaft to the pto drive snaps while making sharp turns with a pull behind brush hog. I do not know if their is a special bolt for this. I have been using a three inch by three-eights inch grade five bolt. I am afraid that anything stronger will break something that is not supposed to break. Is that possible? Thank you.

I use & have used a "grade 2" 3/8" diameter bolt on my WD for years - rarely shear one. Something is wrong in the drive line of your bush hog - either you are turning too short or the drive line is binding up when you turn. Any time I have sheared a bolt it is usually from hitting something (stump, rock, etc) while going straight. My $0.02

DO NOT USE GRADE 8 BOLT i come across 2or3 wd's with BUSTED PTO gears every year if your lucky you will just break the lower gear [ easy fix] more often than not you will brake 1 or 2 gears inside the transmission they cost about $100 each used. and you have to split the tractor to repace them IV'e done it FIND THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM it will be cheaper than using a grade 8 if you are just mowing grass & have no binding problems you could get away with a grade 8 but it only takes one stump or rock to cost you BIG$$$$$$$$$$$$$ good luck

Waffle, I recently broke my bolt, and went to the Allis dealer to get another. Agco still makes them, but they run about $12 a piece. The dealer said that a grade 8 bolt would do fine. This is not supposed to be a shear bolt. I used a 2-1/2"x1/2" grade 8 bolt, lock washer and lock nut. Have brush hogged and mowed hay (at least 20 hours worth) with no problems. Good Luck! Tim

Sounds like your PTO shaft on the bush hog is too
long and you're jamming it when you turn.

Waffle i asume you are refering to the bolt on the out put shaft of the pto gear box. you should not snap that bolt while turning a corner with the pto running. check the shaft and gear box out put shaft for excessive wear, make sure you are using the rite size bolt for the pto shaft, DO NOT MAKE A TURN OF MORE THAN 20 OR 30 DEGREES WITH PTO RUNNING. a sharp turn with pto running will tear up the u joints on your mower causeing some very expensive repairs on the mower. does your mower have shear pins on it?

Hi Waffle, I was told years ago that a universal joint would only run smoothly up to about 15 degrees. Also my wd45 has a 1/2 inch bolt with a 3/8 inch fine thread on the end. The 1/2 inch part which goes through the shaft being smooth. Dave
