backfires through exhaust, cleaned carb, air filter ran good for 45 min, but now it runs
bad all the time. cuts out, backfires, spark plugs
are black with carbon.

fw, Backfiring normally indicates lean fuel mixture BUT with carbon on the plugs it indicates poor ignition. Sounds like time for a tune up. I would install new points, condensor,and plugs. Check dist. cap and rotor for carbon tracks that indicate shorting out. If the problem continues check the coil. Duey

i forgot to say i checked the pionts also, gap
was ok, didnt clean them
