I finally got out the bottom pin, but cannot pull the brake shoes out throught the top opening. Is there a secret to this? Thanks for your help!

Well this weekend I got the bottom pins out of the brakes on the WD I am working on. I ended up drilling and tapping the pin and using a grade 8 bolt and 13/16 socket to pull the pins out. First I had to grind about 1/16 inch off the head of the pins, they are case hardened. Then drill and tap a fairly deep hole to allow enough threads to get a good grip on the bolt, didn't have a stud and threaded rod was not tough enough, and use a grade 8 bolt and pull them out. still wasn't easy. I would recomend that before installing these pins , with a lot of grease or anti seize, drilling and tapping, it will be a lot easier with the pins out than trying to do it with them under the tractor. If not you, someone will be glad you did it someday.

Did you disconnect the brake rods? Once you remove the springs, bottom pins and rods each shoe should slide up and out easily, one at a time. It is those bottom pins that are the bear! You have to remove the adjusting nut from the clevis(on top) and remove the front shoe first. Dave

The brake rod was broken off.That is why I'm doing the repair. You are right the only way I could get that rod oput was to weld a bolt onto the pin and then use the bolt as a puller.
