WD45 drains battery

I hope someone out there has an idea before I lose all my hair. My WD45 has a one-wire alternator, 12V w/resistor & starter. For months I have been able to start it (with a crank), have it run perfectly for about 30 to 40 seconds, then die with a dead battery. I've tried disconnecting the alternator - same results; different battery -same results; changing all wires to alternator, starter, coil - same results; even changed ammeter - same results; and have taken alternator and starter to shop and been told that they seem to be fine. None of the wiring seems hot. What else can it be? The tractor ran fine without any changes (though the alternator wasn't charging) for over a year before this started. We've had it for over 30 years and no problems.

Thanks for the help. This is a busy time of year, and with having to charge up the battery, it takes a long time to try things. The battery checks out Ok, but it apparently isn't going completely dead (I thought it was). I now suspect the air cleaner, because I let it sit for a couple of hours with the battery in place, then cranked it started (just ran about five seconds) and saw oil blowing up out of the top of the air cleaner. The bowl and oil at the bottom looked Ok, but the filter material above looks pretty gunked up.

Make sure the panel that the ampmeter and ign switch are in is grounded to frame.

Sounds like battery cable problems to me, battery would explode otherwise. Take off and inspect all battery cables and connections!!

Bill, When you say dead battery in that short of time, without battery exploding, I take it that you mean no 12 volt to ignition to keep it running and since you are hand cranking, I assume not enough battery to use starter!! This would indicate a bad battery cable or bad connections. Try jumper cables from battery to ground and to starter. Let us know what happens. Duey

Bill, you need to redefine the problem. You start the tractor and it dies in 30 seconds. Why? Will it restart with the crank? DO you have a magnito? Can you disconnect everything, crank the motor and have it run fine? The mag needs no battery. When does the battery die? If a battery is full charge i can not believe it discharges in 30 seconds. If it did something would be red hot. Does the battery only go down when the starter or alternator are connected?

I think since it dies like that, the switch is bad because the same thing happened to me.
