I have a ACWD which was running rough. It will not fire since being shut off. No spark and little gas getting past the carb. Cleaned the tank bulb and carb still no luck. Where do I find how to fix a magneto, it is a Fairbanks morse.

Make certain you are getting the impulse when you turn the mag. You should hear a loud click each time it rotates to the next cyl. If you turn the mag by hand (out of the engine) you will feel the spring start to load and then hear the snap as it unloads.

Richard, When you are working on the fuel line, take off the sediment bowl, turn on the fuel--if very slow or no flow, you probably have rust flakes blocking fuel flow. Will have to unscrew filter unit from tank and clean. Blowing back into the tank with air will only unplug temporary. Rob is correct about the condensor and coil points etc. Duey

As far as the gas goes, just check everything up to the carb. Disconnect the fuel line at the carb and turn on the gas bowl. Good flow? If yes, then most likely carb or leaky intake manifold. If no, work back to the tank. Ream line out with low "E" guitar string or blow with compressed air. Remove sediment bowl, clean it and drain gas from tank looking for rust chunks or other trash. Poke around tank outlet to clear it out.

With the mag, do the easy stuff first. Use fine emery cloth or point file to clean points, replace condensor, clean rotor and check cap for cracks or moisture. Maybe replace brushes & springs in cap. Reassemble EXACTLY the way it was and hold plug wire to good ground (clean metal or even in your hand) and crank engine to check for spark. Good thick spark to metal or a "wake up call" to your hand and you're in business. If not, you may have to remove mag and swap coils or reset the timing. Not a whole lot more to do there. If you remove the mag, try to mark the top tooth so you get it back in roughly the same spot in case the timing was correct. Be sure wires go to 1-2-4-3 (1 closest to radiator) and clockwise on cap from top left. May be a good time to change plug wires and boots. Use solid core wires, not the resistor wires for cars.

You may want to try to pull-start your tractor first to rule out bad battery or dirty/loose connections in starter circuit.

I have gotten mag pats from 1-800-MAGNETO. Great service and inexpensive. Have all #s off your mag ready if you call. Sometimes the thing that was wrong will be the last thing you check, but you'll have it running again. Good luck, RC

RC, Learn something new every day! Never thought of using the low "E" guitar string to clean out gas lines. Have used a cutting torch tip cleaner to clean jets in carb. Know now what to do with old set of guitar strings. Roger Welch would be proud if he knew we were recycling here. Maybe he would even write a song this time instead of a book. (The Old Broken Down Allis Blues!) Thanks, Dale

The other guys had some good tips. I can only think of one more to add about the mag. Check the rotating magnet and make sure it is still rotating securely w/ the shaft. I have heard of problems of the rotating magnet coming loose from the shaft. It seems to me that this is a good possibility since it ran rough for a while then died and not started since. Good luck.
