WD missing then quits

My WD has been running pretty well with exception of today. Went to help Amish neighbor in field beside my home by pulling wagon to his baler and taking his loaded wagon to his barn. He uses horses. Pulled wagon beside baler and WD quit. Would not start except fire some and pop and spit. Have been working 3 hours on it. The Amishman's 3-horse team of Belgians passed me several times in field and smiled as they lumbered by with heavy 4 cylinder wisc., baler, and wagonload of bales. Now, the problem; WD will run for 20 seconds or so like nothing is wrong, starts missing, even backfires some, then quits. I have been turning adjustment screws on carb and am sure I have them messed up. It will restart in a short time and do the same thing. I have blown out gas line to carb from bowl. I have cleaned bowl screen. Plenty of gas in tank. Gas runs out line at carb. Must be carburetor? Right?

Check the fuel tank vent. If it doesn't vent the gas won't run out.

Dan, Steve is correct about the coil . Probably shorts out when hot. Condensor can do the same. Sounds like time to tune up the ignition system. You might check the fuel tank for anything floating in the bottom. I have had to remove tree leaves that would cause a temporary shut down like you describe. Duey

wait till tomorrow morning when it is cool and try again. coil in magneto may be breaking down when hot.

Appreciate the help. WD started right off this a.m. as if nothing was wrong. I cleaned out gas tank just for good measure. Took tractor for test run and it did precisely the same thing again. Ran some 5-6 hundred yards and started to miss slightly, I stopped and attempted to adjust carb and it began bad miss and then quit. Would only fire once in a while but would not run. I pulled WD with wife on it, back to garage with truck (what a fun trip). When we got it there. I attempted to start it. It fired up like nothing was wrong again. It has recently had a rebuilt mag on it with new coil, etc. I assume I need to have mag checked again?? Thanks again.

I'd would have pulled off the carb intake hose and gave it a shot of ether/starting fluid real quick. If it would have fired or sputtered, I would have eliminated an electrical cause. If no firing at all, then I know the ignition is dead somehow.

Mine did the same thing and it was the small jet in the bottom of the carb. Take the carb. apart and blow all the jets out with carb cleaner.
