I HAVE A C-ALLIS VERY HARD TO START. HAVE REBUILT MAG, REBUILT CARBARATOR, PLUGS. I HAVE CHECK TIMING. ONCE IT IS STARTED IT RUNS PERFECT. TO START IT IS BY LUCK OR HAVE TO PULL IT VERY FAST. WILL NOT START SLOW SPEED OR WITH CRANK. I HAVE BEEN TOLD TO CHECK COMPRESSION. COMPRESSION RUNS LOW 80'S TO LOW 90'S IN ALL CLYINDERS. COULD THIS BE WHY IT WILL NOT START??

THANK YOU FOR ANY INFORMATION.

rick,
i have had the same problems from time to time.
i would keep away from starting fluid though, you could bend a rod. listen for your impulse lags clicking. make sure the points are clean. put in new plugs...again..they get a coating on them when you have been trying to start them with out gas and just cleaning them doesn't seem to work, I don't know why, but it doesn't(maybe a range hotter, i have hotter plugs in my c and it starts without choking in warm weather).
try squirting some oil in the cylinders and then put on a compression gage...see how much it goes up...hopefully you don't need rings. best of luck..... they can be cantankerous, huh?

Did it start right away when you gave it a shot of ether? The Engine Start in a can is cheap and is a quick way to separate ignition and carb problems.

Try adjusting your valves . A good way to check if your valves are too tight is to remove all the spark plugs and see if it will turn over and spin the moter. IF it spins no problem adjust you valves. Good luck JAMES

Two thoughts- faulty mag impulse, should hear "snap" at cranking speeds or broken
spring on small flapper of choke plate. If it is a Marvel Schebler carb my money is on the choke ! Bill

Dunno about the compression, but it sounds like you either have a weak spark or you're not getting enough fuel to fire off easily. Make sure that you are using non-resistor spark plugs and that you are NOT using RF-suppression spark plug wires. 6V ignition systems do not tolerate either one very well. HTH

Do you get spark from plug wire to the spark plug while hand cranking?

Yes we get spark. Also mag has been rebult two times and carb once.

Rick, I have five of those engines that have been completly rebuilt, all have to have different choke settings to start. The one B has to have full choke untill running, another B has to have two flips of the crank with the choke on and then it starts with one or two pulls of the crank. If you make the third pull with the choke on and I dont want to wait for a hour, I have to pull start it or pull the plugs out and blow dry the gas off the plug. I have another B and a C that in warm weather you just dont choke at all or they flood as well. The CA has to have only half choke to start in warm weather.

I would check the choke as Bill said and then set the timing with a timing light, vacuum gage or both. I would also pull the plugs out after you cranked it a few times and see if they are wet.
A slight restriction in the power jet will cause it to start hard as well. Small particals of rust or dirt in the float valve will make it start hard. The list goes on and on.

check for a vacume leak too, manifold to head gaskets. Carb to manifold gasket. Hole rusted in manifold, maybe between intake and exhaust? Just a thought.

if you have good spark when turning with the crank, and the plugs are new. i would pull the plugs and put a spoon full of gas in each hole. reinstall plugs and crank. if it starts up, then your problem is the carb has trouble pulling fuel. if it still will not start, i would guess the timing needs to be double checked again.
