WD45 Brakes

I just bought a WD45 and found that the rod has broken off that runs from the brake pedal rod into the housing where the brake shoes are located. Does this mean that I will have to tear the hole rear axle apart or is there an easier way?

Appreciate all replys.

The whole unit will pull out thru the top with the brake shoes after removing the lower pivot pin and the springs. Bill

The lower pin can be a problem to remove if it is rusted. Sometimes tapping it in will break it loose. Twisting with vicegrips whole prying out can work too. The AC manual says drill and tap and use a bolt and socket to make a puller. I tried and my pins were too hard to to that with under the tractor. I plan to drill and tap them before I put them back in. In the lathe. I wouldn't drill too deep, don't want to weaken the pin, but enough to get a stud in, then a socket and nut will pull them next time. Of course I will install them with anti-seize or grease so maybe they won't be rusted next time anyway. The rod that is broken on yours has a setting when you install the new one (that you make, or weld on to your old one?) use a piece of wire to re hook the springs, through the houseings. Front edge of toggle is 15 5/16" fropm the nearest edge of hole in rod. This can be measured through rod opening at bottom of housing. Do not use this rod as a brade adjustment, as it will upset the leverage on pedal. To adjust turn equalizing screw in tight. Depress pedal two inches. Adjust5 brake band nut until lining contacts drum. Release pedal. Adjust equalizing screw (approx. 1/2 turn) until front and rear likings has equal cleaarance on breake. Raise wheel frim floor while making adjustment, turn to determine if brake drags. There is some info from a copyn of a WD / WD-45 manual.
