take the distributor cap off. pull the spark plugs. bump the starter, or hand crank untill the front cylinder comes up on compression. the distributor arm should be pointing at no 1 plug wire on the cap. note which way the distributor shaft is turning. 1-2-4-3. It is easy to change over to 12 volt alternator if you want to. For short term, charging the battery once a week is a good suggestion. If you want additional info on a alternator changeover we cant get you some prints. or go to the address line at top of this page and change the post number(24965) to /21572/html for old info on a alternator changeover.

Tommy, Yes,#1 is toward radiator. Yes, firing order is 1243. No reason to switch to 12-volt if tractor's health is good.Need to use 1-0 cables or bigger with very clean connections. Check Article Archives on this site for an article on The Little ACs. Have fun! These are neat little tractors.

Generator is missing, thought it may be best to use alternator to replace it.

If you aren't running the tractor day after day and if you don't need lights you can get by just fine with no generator or alternator. Just chagre the battery once in a while. It will start the tractor and run the coil or if it has a mag. just start it, just fine for sometime. If it is used daily, or needs lights, well maybe it is more convenient to have it charge automaticaly.
