I bought a 1965 cub that is in very good condition, but will not start. I disassembled and cleaned the carb. but it will not hit. It has fire and will run when gas is poured into cylinders. It appears it is not pulling fuel from the carb. but it has vacuum when checked by placing hand over carb. inlet and cranking. Any ideas? Thanks

take the fuel line off the carb and see waht runs from the tank, thru the filter and line. probably need to take sediment bowl and line apart and clean out.

Turn on the fuel shut off valve on the filter? how about a plugged fuel tank vent? Remove drain plug from bottom of carb and see if a steady stream of gas comes out, if no plug take off fuel line and see if a good stream of gas flows from tank. Check choke operation.

Thanks very much for the followups. The gas flow to the carb. is fine. The bowl will fill, float closes needle valve, and I checked fire with tester and it looks hot and easily jumps 1/4 inch gap. I did get it to fire a few times, but it would not stay running. The IH carb. is so simple I do not see what could go wrong with it, but I do not see what else could be wrong. The motor has been overhauled so the engine is fine. Still perplexed.

Herb, are your plugs clean? hows the magneto? if you have been running it a lot, trying to start it, maybe the plugs are carboned up(?).
put in new plugs (not just clean them) and try it.
My magneto gave me all kinds of fits, until I replaced it. just a thought.

Herb, i dont know your carb exactly, but if the bolw is full of gas, and youhave good spark, and you can pour gas down the plug hole and it will start and run for a few seconds, then it sould like it will not pull gas out of the carburetor bowl. I suppose there is a small thin tube from the carburetor throat down into the gas bowl, or a brass screw in tube, etc??? I would get a print ofthe carburetor. Maybe this small tube is plugged or came out??

When checking out a carb that won't work you need to know where EVERY hole and passage goes, and that it is free and clear, and if it is supposed to have a jet in it that the jet is there and that there is no crud under it. All passages need to be blown out with air after a gentle cleaning with a wire or drill. When my brother started or tried to start his WC with a carb that hadn't been run for a while, even though he had been through it (he thought) the tractor wouldn't run excepe with the choke on. Turns out there was a passage that went from the choke plate area to the bowl that was plugged with mud. It was so perfect in the choke area that you couldn't see the mud there, had to find it by following the other end of the passage and seeing where it should come out. Then the tractor ran great. You can never tell when something crazy like this is foiling you.

Thanks very much for all the ideas. The tractor now is running fine, with what may be the cleanest carb in the world. Unfortunately it was not the carb that was the problem. It suddenly dawned on me that although the plugs fired to ground, they might not be firing under compression, perhaps gas fouled. I installed new plugs and it started instantly. The fire at the old plugs had looked fine, so I am still wondering if I might have a weak coil.
Agaain thanks for the help, this is a very useful site.
