WD-45 that wouldn't start. Took the magneto in and had it rebuilt. Now starts. They said only needed a new cap as the other was cracked. That solved the starting problem, but still have the problem of a new set of plugs lasting only 20 minutes before they carbon out. Can replace and restart and run, which I couldn't do before. Any ideas on carbon problem. Compression 88, 75, 85, 85. Some smoke from exhaust. Uses lots of oil, but that is engine seal problem. Need to fix this first.

This may sound off the wall but I had a John Deere doing the same thing and I tried all the things so far mentioned, nothing worked until I had to remove the head for some other work. Found the head gasket was leaking between cylendars and causing the problem for some unknown reason. New gasket fixed it.

Would the tractor idle for more than an hour with out fouling the plugs? If so it should be a problem with the load fuel system of the carb. I got faked out on a rebuild once be cause someone had drilled the main jet oversize and reinstalled it. Engine used too much fuel and would load up real quick. The main jet size is usually a number stamped on the end of the jet, i.e. 40, 50, etc..You insert the largest practicle shank end of a number type drill bit into the jet. The drill number and stamped number should match.

Mike, I'm with Brian. Had a C with a miss I couldn't find. Was talking it up at the barber shop with about four old farmers and the barber all asking questions as to what I had done. One oldtimer asked what kind of plugs I used, Champions I said. In unison they all said that was the problem. I laughed but went by the parts store on the way home , bought some autolite plugs and installed them. Had to re-adjust carb and timing. An amazing difference.

Well I had put AC plugs in my slant six truck as part of a tune up. Tied to fine a miss under load for a year. Replaced and checked a lot all the time saying "it can't be the plugs, they are new". Well fianlly with nothing else to do Iput in a set of Champions. No more problem, has run smooth, never misses. I don't really blame the ACs, I know of other engines that run fine on them, but it is true that some engines like one plug or another.

mike, this also depends on your plugs. i run only autolite 295 in both my WD's.
if by chance your running champions remove them!!
the only thing there good for is thrownig at the groundhogs.

You are either getting too much fuel or not enough air. For too much fuel either the float level is set too high, the needle/set assembly is leaking, the power mixture screw is turned too far out, the idle mixture screw is turned too far in, the float has fuel inside of it and is giving too high of a float level, or the main fuel jet was not reinstalled if it had been removed. For not enough air either the choke butterfly valve is not fully openning or there is a restriction between the carb air inlet and the air cleaner inlet cap. Is there any chance the linkage for the choke is connected backwards? Is there any chance the choke plate shaft and choke plate were assembled with the arm of the shaft now 180 out from where is supposed to be. I looked at my manual and it shows the arm of the choke plate shaft to be down for off. Has the hose between the carb inlet and the air cleaner outlet collapsed internally? Does the air cleaner need disassembled and cleaned? We can still win.

Carb rebuilt by me. Then rebuilt professionally. Everything there was, and still is fine. Cleaned the air/oil bath and checked for clogs. Choke installed correctly. Throttle valve correct. Hose is fine for air intake. Tractor runs great, for about 40 minutes until plugs foul. Wet and black. Can't reuse. Now have about 40 old (once used) plugs around. Will dig in with both tires spinning in second until the plugs start to foul. Replace plugs. Good for another hour.

Mike, You can clean those spark plugs with spray carb. cleaner. It will disolve the carbon. You never said what kind and # of plugs you have been using. After adjusting the carb main jet, does the exhaust still have black smoke?? And have you tried taking the bottom oil filled cup off of the air cleaner?? Or, better yet, the hose to the air cleaner off to eliminate the air cleaner as a sourse of the problem ? You are sooooo o close to finding the solution. Duey

Mike,
One other possibility is the float being set too high in the carb. Since it was just rebuilt, this is a pretty likely suspect if the adjustment screws don't help. Also, be sure the float really floats. A sinking float can be a bear to find.

Just thought of one other possibility. Check the choke plate to be sure it's being fully rotated to the correct position when the lever is set to the off position. If the carb wasn't assembled correctly, this could happen.

Good luck,
Phil

Choke fine. He put in a new float. I had adjusted float both up and down. He said adjustment is fine. He has been rebuilding carbs for about 35 years and really knows what he is doing. Plate rotates. You can choke it dead when it is running if you want.

Hey Mike, Carboned up plugs still sounds like poor spark or too much fuel. You said it smokes- black(too much unburned fuel) or bluish (oil past the rings or down valve stems). You can adjust the main jet in carb by running full RPMs then turn adjustment screw clockwise untill engine falters then back out untill running smooth then additional 1/2 turn for power. It would be nice if a neighbor or friend had another mag to try. Duey

Since rebuilding the magneto, the plugs spark over 1/4 inch when touched to frame. Nice hot spark. Starts every time. Just when it starts missing, it won't start until I replace plugs. Got that much fixed.

I am the one who ownes the B allis that had a bad mag I put two rebuilt mags on it and they also ran good for about a hour and shut down, I changed mine over to a distributor two years ago and have had no more problems.

Duey, I will try adjusting the carb. Just had that rebuilt before the magneto, so it seems to be good. Will set it tomorrow after running it a few minutes to be sure it is warm. The smoke is black.

That is too much unburned fuel. Let us know how you turn out. Duey

Yes, but the only thing I can think to try now is replace the seals on the exhaust/intake manifold. Have set the carb adjustments correctly now and it still fouls black plugs in an hour.
