Alternator on WD

I have a 51 WD with magneto,generator,cutout, and it is a 12 volt system, has a 12volt battery, and 12 volt lights, The generator seems to have given up the ghost!! What is the easiest alternator to replace with?? How do I connect the wires?? Do I need to also replace magneto with a distributor if I do the alternator?? My generator is mounted on the frame on the left side, someone said they thought originally they think the generators were on the engine?? Do I need to put on a coil when I do this?? Anyone have any pictures of theirs and how it looks with the alternator so , I know what & where ,how it should fit and look. I have 2 toggle switches on the dash, 1 for the ground out to the magneto, the other to the lights, when the lights get turned on the amp meter goes to a minus 10 or so, when off, it settles at 0, was at around 8 to 10 before?? Help

I only need to make mention of two things, Jim. If you choose to go to the alternator (a good idea) you will want to use a negative ground situation. This will not change any other thing. The alternator will not run without this change. The GM alternators are perfect for this tractor. You will want to go to Radio Shack for the parts - a large diode and a special connector to go on the alternator. Lots of copies of the electrical schematic make it easy. And, the ammeter on the dash will need to be of a greater range. plus/minus 20 is too small. 60 would be better. It wil lbe faithful for a long time. Mine all are.

Jim, if yo wish to convert to 12 volt alternator it is not hard. The most common of all alternators is the Delco 10Si used on 1975-1985 General MOtors cars and trucks with internal regulator. This has a three wire system. You can also purchase another version called the "one wire" system from places like JC Whitney that need no external excitation, only a positive wire to the battery. The standard GM Delco alternator off a 1975 chevy truck can be purchased for $35. at Auto Zone. If yo wish to continue I can send you a wiring diagaram with more details. As Dave said you need not worry about the mag, coil, or starter, etc.

Look in the articles archives section of this site for articles on 12 volt conversions. It is an easy do with the right parts and some back ground information. It is possible to convert from magneto ignition to battery ignition but that is a separate conversion matter.

The WD generator is mounted on the frame rail left hand side. The cutout is mounted on top the generator. The magneto has nothing to do with your electrical system. Leave is alone. I suspect that you don't have a true 12 volt system. On my tractor, someone had put an 8 volt battery on it. People will work very hard from fixing a problem correctly. If your tractor were mine, I'd fix the problem that would cause someone to think that they need a 12 volt system. Namely, buy new grounding strap from positive terminal to ground, new battery cable to starter switch and remove starter motor from housing (takes one bolt) and sand the O.D. of the motor and I.D. of the housing to get absolutely good contact. You'll need a new 6 volt battery and probably new cutout switch ($23.00) for the generator. That's about it except for the lamps. Oh, the toggle switch for the lights is not original. There was a push pull switch that did that job and had a fast charge position too. I'd buy the shop manual from Sandy Lake Implement for about $20 buck too. It's got tons of good info in there including a wiring diagram for this very simple machine.

I agree whole heartedly with dave, you should get that wd back to original. The 6 volt system has worked for many years. You can have the generator rebuilt for around $100 and a new battery at napa is around $50. this way you would not be cobbing somthing that does not belong and burning out lights and a starter. I have a wd as well and the person before me put a altenator on it,and it does not work that well. not only does it not work well but the teeth on the flywheel are getting bad and I think its because the 12 volt battery makes the starter engage too hard and too fast. spliting that tractor in half is a job that I am dreding.

Dave and Jeff both have a good point.Does it make any difference to weather the tractor stays origional ornot?that's the Question in my case it Didnot matter.I have a 1954 wd45 wide front end.I used alternator (used)off 1976 ford truck.I also used the voltage regulator.I know about all the new internal reg.atuff but i like to work with what I'm used to trouble shooting.Also use what I already have.the old allis gen.pully will fit right on this alt,making it ready for the wide fan belt as before.Consider your options.I've installed many for other prople all brands but am still proud of the one on the old 45.
