D17 won't move!!!!!!

First post on this board, spend most of my time on the Ford and N board, but have a friend with a D17 that he was using last winter to push snow and when he went to change directions it quit moving all together. It runs well and doesn't make any noise except if you put it in 4th gear you hear a rumbling noise from the rearend. Can any of you give us a hand on what it might be. I don't know much about AC and he asked me if I could post something as he does'nt have a computer to find out and I told him I would to try to find out what was wrong. Also if he has to look into the rearend what does it take to take the center cover with the 3pt lift off the back of the rearend to check it out? Sorry for long post. Thanks for any answers I can get, they will be appreciated. Greg NE

It sounds like the differential may have broke. These tractors on ocassion lose the pinion gear pin. You have to remove the rear lift housing cover to check it out. Drain the oil make sure the pto lever is engaged and remove the three bolts holding pto shaft and remove it. Then take bolts out of lift housing and remove. Use a lift to handle the housing. Then inspect the differential. It may have to be replaced which requires a lot of labor. Have you checked the main clutch yet?

Greg you did not say if the growling noise you hear is in all the gears or just fourth. I can only guess on the problem, could be the clutch disk is bad or a broken gear or shaft in the transmisson or in the rear end. give more details as to what it is or is not doing.

Thanks for the answers so far! As far as the noise goes you can't hear anything in first or second but if you put it in third you can hear a little bit of noise, it is when you put it in fourth grear you can hear it the best. My friend claims the PTO turns but it will not move at all no matter what we try. To pull the lift do we have to unhook anything inside to pull the lift all the way off and to pull the tranny cover off is there anything to worry about putting the gearshift back in so we can check the tranny first? Thanks for the time to answer my ?s. I don't know anything about AC tractors as all I have ever worked on is the older Fords. My friend would really like to get this fixed as it was his Dad's before he passed away about three years ago. Thanks again Greg NE
