Grinding noise

I have just got my little jewel wd45 going . I am hearing a grinding noise in the drive gears somewhere. When I got it a seal was out in the pto housing causing all the fluid to leak out there was little greese in the rear and a lot of water the wheel gear resovior was also low. does this sound like a bad bearing or do these tractors make this noise? this is my first Chalmer and don't have a clue about it! If this is a bad bearing or something where would you guys start? rear end or final drive gears. thanks mike p

Have you checked the gear oil in each final drive ? They both require gear lube which is seperate from the rear axle housing. Does the noise get worse when you apply the brakes? You may have a damaged differential from low fluid level.

Hi Mike, I'm reasonably new to WD45's too. However I was going to suggest that you engage and disengage the transmission clutch. It may help you to isolate the noise. Good luck. By the way I think they are great tractor. Dave

Mike,, I dont know much about the WD, but lets narrow it down a little so others can help. Start the engine and with transmission in neutral, you do not hear it. Engage the PTO, do you hear it now? Put the transmission in gear and start moving. Do you hear it now? Is it louder in 3rd gear than first, or higher pitch (gears are turning faster). Roll down a hill, push in the clutch, even kill the engine. Do you hear it in the final drives with the clutch disengaged and tractor rolling? These things will help the guys tel you if it is in the top shaft or in the finals. Might be able to jack up one wheel at a time and roll the wheel in place, with the other on the ground. Which gear box makes the noise?
