Mike I did exactly what Steve has done but I also purchased a Sunpro voltmeter from Auto Zone and used the diagram from it for the wiring, the two prongs on the back were not needed and I modified the old generator bracket to work with the alternator.Reverse the polarity and get a 12 volt coil (not shure what one).

most people doing the switch use the Delco 10SI alternator. It was used by general motors onall cars and trucks from the early 70's till the mid 80's. Go to Auto Zone and tell them you want an alternator for a 1975 chevy truck with internal regulator. You can get for $30.00 . The internal type has two prong plug on the edge of the rear case. The two prongs are in line. The external reg version (do not want it) has the prongs parallel (side by side) about the same location. You need a power wire and a on-off wire (key?) to make it work. Ask again if you but it and need a specific print.

There are some good items on this in the archives section of this site. If you have not picked up an alternator yet you might want to look at a v belt drive ND unit from an 80's/90's era Datsun. They are smaller in diameter than the Delco units and have an internal voltage regulator also. I found out too late when I converted my WD45. I mounted the alternator above the water pump and mounted a power steering pump at the old generator position. A smaller diameter alternator would have been easier.

Mike,On the diagram I sent you the part numbers are NAPA. The ign switch is key type with acc. to separate the alternator wire
from the dist wire. You need to separate the white alternator wire from the batt. side of the switch so the distributor doesn't get feed back and keep the engine running when the switch is off.
You also need to unhook the resister on the light switch or use a toggle switch. The white wire reads the load for the internal regulator and is supposed to let the regulator know how much to charge. The red wire to the amp gauge is the charging wire. If you run a mag, it takes a different switch that grounds the mag to stop the engine.

( KS6116 is for distributor and used with origional pull start ) ( KS6180 is for distributor and used with a solinoid for key start - Starter terminal must be changed to bolt type ) ( 7-01852 is for magnito and used with a solinoid-Starter terminal must be changed to bolt type ) ( 7-01853 is for magnito and used with origional pull start ). Ed, The wiring diagram I have is a generic 6 volt to 12 volt conversion. Someone on the JD postings could probably help you with origional. Duey
