This B ran good when parked ten years ago.The engine stuck during this time. I removed the engine & sent the block to a machine shop to clean and remove sleeves. After removing one of the sleeves a crack was found in upper part of cylinder. The lower part where sealing ring goes is OK. The guy at the shop thinks it will be ok to use, he said head gasget would seal any leak. Does anyone know if this is common, What caused the crack? And do you think this block is ok to rebuild?

A lot more of them are cracked than that are not.
It should be good to go. If the crack has opened up a great deal a tie bolt can be put in to pull it back togather. I put a picture story on a while back as how to install a tie bolt. It's in the arcives some where. You probably don't need it or they would have told you that a different block was called for.
