My B starter spins the wrong way how can I fix it.

A starter will only spin one way no matter wich way
you have the cables hooked up. It depends on which
direction the winding on the armature are wound and
cannot be changed to the best of my knowlege(I am
a master certified auto tech). Also, if you tried
to recharge a dead battery in "reverse polarity the
best thing that could happen to you is that the battery simply would not charge of be totally ruined. Chances are you would blow up the battery and ruin the charger. I believe JD is correct, you need to find a starte designed to spins the direction you want it to. Hope this helps.

Chad!
I have bought motors for liftgates that are basically starter type motors that can turn eather direction. If you pull a motor off a liftgate that is clockwise you have to get a clockwise replacement. It must have something to do with the windings and armeture and how they are made.
I asked a good starter builder once for a starter for a positive ground semi. He chuckled and told me "that starter doesn't no the difference between pos and neg ground????? ?? Sounds like you need to find a good starter and alternater builder to help you out.

JD is right. The starter is wound to turn clockwise or couter clockwise. It dont know what is + or - or 6 volt or 12.

Some of the older tractors have a positive ground electrical system. I have a cub that has a 6 volt positive ground system. It could be that when you put the new battery in, you grounded the negative post. This would cause the starter to rotate the wrong direction if the system was originally a positive ground system.

Chad, Unhook the starter from the tractor battery and ,with jumper cables , hook up to another battery. If it turnes the correct direction, let me know and i'll tell you how to fix it. Duey

Duey I've taken the starter off the tractor hooked j.cables to it and it still turns the wrong way.

Did you hook it to a different battery? Not the tractor battery. (Can be 6 or 12 volt.)

Chad, you don't have your battery cables hooked up backwards, do you? Or did you have a run down battery and charge it up reverse polarity. I read somewhere on another board that this could cause a starter to spin backwards. We all do stupid stuff from time to time so it is possible.

Steve the battery is new I got it out of another car,most people tell me it doesn;t matter which way the cables are hooked up

Is this an original starter that came with the tractor? If so, has it been worked on somewhere? I can't think how it would spin backward unless an unusual armature like from an Oliver were put into it.

I found out what was wrong today, I got 2 starters with a trade and thought they were the same the onlt thing is the housings were different,the place where the foot switch is the opposite end of the original one making it go backwords I hope! Getting old housing rebuild tommorow!! And thanks for all your HELP!

Hi Chad Sounds like you may be going in the right direction "So to Speak"

Be sure to let us all know what fixes "Wrongway the starter"

There are lots of folks including me on this board that probably have bald spots from cratchin the old Noggin over troubles like yours.
