You guys were nice enough to help me figure out what kind of tractor Dad has, now I am thinking about fixing her up. Dad thinks it's a waste of good money, but I disagree. I don't have alot of money but I can do a little when I can. I need to start with the back rims. They are in bad shape, in fact they are so week we roled a rim off the center the last time we got her in a good pullad she kicked sidways. Can anyone tell me where I can find rims and will they have to be modified to work? I have checked various local parts dealers and no one seems to know where I could find them. If I can't get the rims there is no sense in going any further.

Ryan I am in western PA. about an hour and a half east of Pittsburgh. Find out what he wants for the rims. I had another guy in TX email me and said he had used ones. I would at least have to see a picture of used ones before I bought them to make sure they were the right thing and worth the money. No offence intended, I wouldn't sell you something unless you had some way of at least partly checking it out. No sense paying that kind of shipping if they are of no use. Let me know the price first. I think I am going to take Aarons advice and get the motor and everything else going right first and then work on the rims. That is if I can talk dad into parting with the tractor. Guess I should actually have it before I start fixing it.

A good source for rims is Miller Tire at http://www.millertire.com

I have to say you didn't do alot for my hopes of fixing up the old WC but thanks for the adivce, better to know now than latter. I know it needs motor work. It runs but the carb is in need of replacement. There is a thumb screw type valve that leeds from the gas tank to the carb and if you let it open the gas drips out of the carb at a pretty good rate. I checked and it isn't around the sedament bulb either, that would be too easy. I think the govenor needs work also because the motor wont idel. When you let it set and idel the motor reves up and idels down and then reves up again repeatedly. The problem is either the govenor or the carborator. What makes me think it is the govenor is that it doesn't respond well under a load all the time either. In general the motor could probably stand to be overhalled all together. The tires are not to bad, a couple of small cuts but they would be ok for a while. She also needs brakes, especially the right one. Most of our turns were to the right and you used that break alot, especially when plowing and mowing hay.It needs a new exaust pipe but I am not sure about the manafolds.(The way the bolts look that would be a real nightmare if I had to relpalce them.) The sheet metal isn't to bad, one fender could be pounded out with the help of a few body tools, but the other would need replaced. We bent it in when the wheel came off. There are alot of little things that would probably also need fixed once I got started. Needless to say old Allis has seen better days but there is no shame for her she served well. I am located in Western PA and if I decide not to take on the task do you know of anyone who would be interested in fixing her up. You know all the extra features she has, you have helped me figure out most of them. If you know of anyone let me know so I can keep them in mind while I try to decide what I want to do.

Thanks for all the help

Clair

Didn't mean to puta damper on your WC project. All the problems you describe sound simple enough to tackle. The leaky carb is probably the needle and seat. Simple fix. The carb might just need a good going through. Mine ran great with full choke when I first started it, it took dad 2 hours to track down a plugged port in the carb. But it was running just like you describe, only with the choke off, give it full choke and she'd purr right along. I'd start with the carb, that will probably fix the run problem. The brakes can be adjusted. Take the fenders off, then that cast cover, and you can draw the brake band back up where it should be. Pretty simple fix. You might be supprised about those manifold bolts. Mine came of fairly easily. If not, it's not all that hard to get the twisted off ones out and replace them with new studs. I could tell you about all the stuff I went through to get mine running again. You have a simple project. All the stuff you describe is easy to do, fairly cheap, and not all that complicated. Just looks like a lot when you list it all at once. I'd tackle the carb, then the brakes, then the manifold, and keep an eye out for rims when you do it all. Keep smiling, stay happy, and you'll have a great running tractor when you get done.

Thanks Aaron

The first step is going to be the hardest and that is getting dad to part with the tractor. I figured it would be easier if I knew I could get what I needed to fix it. It is great to know that if I do get started I have help. My dad wanted me to buy a John Deere, but I told him if I was going to get a tractor it had to be orange, after all, if it isn't an Allis Chalmers then its just a tractor. By the way, if you don't mind me asking and if you do don't bother to answer, what state are you in? I am in Western PA.

I'm in eastern Iowa. If you look at a map, I'm about 10 miles north of Mt Pleasant, home of the Old Threashers Reunion.

That's right take it one thing at a time, no hurry, you have years, if it is running all that time so much the better. It will keep getting better and better as you go along. If you need help just ask here, somebody will be able to solve your problem. There is a lot of experience here first and last.
