D17 with a leaking rear main seal

The 17 runs like a top since I did the insert "o" ring replacement. The next thing on the agenda will be to replace a leaking rear main seal. Is there any method to slow the leak until I have a chance to split the old girl and do it right? It leaks pretty bad but I am hoping there may be a way to at least slow it a bit before I tear it apart. I need her right now for some field work.

I do not KNOW about a D17. You DO NOT have to split the tractor to replace a rear main seal on a WD or WD45 or WC and I do not think you do on a D17 either. Just take the pan off, remove the rear main bearing cap and replace the seal in two halves. You may wish to refer to the service manual or a automotive service manual for older cars for all of the ways this can be accomplished. Most machanics and others that work on old tractors and old cars have a favorite way to do this. While you have the main bearing cap off be sure to clean the drain back oil holes or slots in the main bearing cap. I like to clean and polish all these surfaces to eliminate the rough cast surfaces and allow the oil to drain back into the crank case readily instead of building up against the seal. Thanks for the reply. I will do a little checking around and see what my options might be. I am kicking myself now, because if it is possible to change that seal with the pan off I should have done it when I replaced the insert "o"rings and piston rings.

My dad had a mechanic replace the oil pan gasket on his tractor because they couldn't get the pan off without splitting the tractor. . .can it be done?
