D17 Temperature Gage

Just finished a insert "o"ring replacement on my D17. I notice that after running a while the Temp gage doesn't move off cold. I know it is hot but don't know how hot! Can anyone tell me how the gage functions, is it a thermal couple? How would I trouble shoot it to determine a fix? I will appreciate any help from the forum on this one.

You might want to loosen the coupling where the sending unit goes into the head and let a little antifreeze leak out around it before retightening. What that does is make sure that there isn't an air pocket around the sending unit which will make it not work...this is from personal experience.

What a great suggestion Dan! I will give it a try 1st thing in the AM. The neighbor wants me to plow their garden so it will be a good test either way.

I believe the sending unit is on the top right side of the head, behind the thermostat housing. .check the line that goes to the back of the gauge. . .did the gauge work properly before?

I really don't recall it not working. I had the head off when I did the re-sleeve, and of course I had to take the housing off when I pulled the head. I may have kinked the braided wire and snapped something when I pushed the sending unit out of my way during the head removal. Just not sure, one way or the other. I will do a little temp check with the Candy Thermometer recommended by Sandy Lake as soon as I get a little time. I am out in the fields on the Green One Planting corn now and have to stay at it until the weather changes. Thanks for your interest and reply!

Don, check your coolant temp with a hand held thermometer (like the wife's candy thermometer when she isn't watching). If your tractor guage doesn't read similar it's time for a new one. And don't say a word if next year the Easter candy tastes a little like Prestone!!! Bill
