What am I overlooking ?

I have had the mag rebuilt--$129, had carberator rebuilt--$48, New intake gaskets. Took gallon can with hose straight to carb, floats won't sink and set at 1 5/32. Rebuilt engine, compression 100# per cylinder. Engine runs at idle --open throttle--sputters and dies and the warmer the engine gets the worse it runs and less power. WHAT AM I OVERLOOKING?? Tried spraying starting fluid for vacuum leak, no leak. This is a "C" 1945. Paul

you state that you have a magneto, then do you have copper spark plug wires? Magnetos cannot use the modern plug wires that most cars use. I would not think it would even start with carbon wires but they may not be helping. also, is the govenor working correctly.

I also think you might have a fuel starvation problem of some sort....

Is it possible that this is a cast as one intake and exhaust manifold? Could it also be possible that this manifold is burnt through ( or darn near burnt through) that opens up and leaks worse with temp increase? This is usually such a vacuum leak that they will not usually idle, but next time carb is off, look up in there and check.

Paul, Has the engine ever been used in a situation
where it just ran at idle or low RPM for hours at a time like on a sickle bar mower? Take the carb off and reach up into the
throat of the intake manifold and see if there
is a real heavy layer of carbon which would allow the engine to run really good at idle but it would not speed up at all. Its a long shot but worth checking. Let me know what you find.

Are you getting enough air into the carb, i.e. is your air filter plugged?

100# of compression is good. Is it still 100# after warm up? If not, that's valve clearance.

How about your spark after warm up? If you're getting a strong bright spark when the tractor is sputtering, the problem probably isn't spark.

Is the engine still loose (easy to turn over) after it warms up? If rings don't have at least .007" ring end gap while cold, they expand and sieze up after the engine warms up.

How does the engine run if you add some choke? Fuel starvation could be a problem. You can take a propane tourch (not lit) and bleed a little gas into the carb intake. If you're not getting fuel, the propane should cause it to rev right up.

Next, check your spark timing.

Have you tried new points and capacitor? A bad capacitor would give a weak spark and cause the symptoms you described.

Check the valve lash. If they are too close the valves are held of the seats when things warm up.

Try it without the aircleaner. A plugged aircleaner will cause it to lean out. The greater the demand for airflow, the leaner it will get. Most people just clean the dirt from the bowl and repalce the oil. Thoroughly clean the filter media and try it again. Hope this helps, Brian.

Check main jet circuit in the carburetor. I worked on a ford 6 cylinder truck engine that had a piece of rust in the main jet.
