I have a couple of questions I hope you guys can help me with. 1. When I bog down and kill my tractor,I have a heck of a time getting it started again. I have had to pull off the oil air cleaner cup and pull every plug, clean, and put back. It still does not start very well. Once it starts it runs well. Any tricks that you guys use to get it starting? 2. Has anyone mounted a exaust stack on top of the muffler. The muffler is pinched together, I think it is supposed to be like that. I want to put a stack and raincap on it. 3. Has anyone heard anything about running reformulated gas in a old tractor?

Thanks for any help you can give.

On the first question, it sounds like an ignition problem. . .I was having a similar problem & replaced the plugs and it has been fine since. . .you may want to go one step hotter if you are getting lots of fouling, I use Autolite 303, because I only mow my yard and it doesn't get a lot of hard work.

On second question, Yes, I have on my '41, and I switched back to the under hood muffler. . .it was a combination visibility/low branches. . .the underhood is crimped at the top to supress noise more. . .I put a small tin soup can on mine if it is going to be sitting outside. . .or you could get a curved tip from an auto store if you want to not use a can. . would look flashy with the chrome tip, and keep the rain out mostly.

What exactly do you mean by reformulated gas? I use 87 octane gas straight from the service station pump. . .the lack of lead will cause only slight problems, becuase of the valve seats . .if you are really worried you can have the head rebuilt with hardened seats or put a lead additive in your gas tank.
