Difference between an AC WC and WD

I was in a junk yard looking for some parts for a farmall H and I found two Allis Chamlers tractor but I do not know if they are a WC or WD. Is there a way to find out what they are by serial numbers? It looks like the two have enough parts to make one good one and I may want to make them next winter's project. Thanks for any info anyone can give me.

Hi Eric. You can find out the model by serial number. The #'s are on the left rear of the axle. Under the brake spring housing. I dont have the chart handy but my WD's have #'s like 41569 (1950), and 81259 (1951). with WD infront of the numbers. Sometimes you have to scrape the paint off to see the #'s. Check the serial numbers section of this site under research and info. WD Allis's started in 1948 with 7 as the first serial number. 1 thru 170107 were WC's serial #'s.I am not sure if there is a WC infront of the WC's serial numbers though. Good luck.:-)

WCs have a round differential like a truck axle, and the casting extends out to the final drives. WDs have seperate axle shaft housings between the final drives and the differential. Quickest way to tell until you learn more about ACs. Both are good tractors and fun. The WC is simpler, the WD probably more useful and easier to operate, live hydraulics, transmission clutch, the WC has neither. Get them though!!

WC has hand brakes, no hand clutch, no lift arms, no hydraulics, smaller rear tires. WC serial number will be right in the middle of the differential, WD will be on the left rear brake housing. Lots of other internal differences, but the ones listed make it easy to tell. Either way, they are easy tractors to work on, easy to get parts for, and anything from a WC, WD, WD45, and the D series will work engine wise. I've got a WC with an engine overhaul kit from a 175. In 1935 the WC made around 30 horse, the 175 in the early 70's made around 60 I believe. Aaron
