Cousin bought a B, now we need help

My cousin bought a B and we ran into a few problems with her. I am used to IH and was able to get her running but please help with a few details.
1. What is the best source for quality manuals?
2. What is the procedure for correct timing? We found the timing marks on the flywheel but we don't know where the marks are. We saw a hole in the bellhousing on the Driver's side (if it were a car) that sems like it would be appropriate but it does not line up to TDC at #1 cylinder. I reset the rotor so that it is pointing at number one cylinder at TDC. It fired and ran, but only when pull started and then it ran smooth but missed when under a load. I then advanced the rotor one tooth and it started on the hand crank.
3. How do I find infomormation to convert it over the foot brakes and an electric start? A donor tractor is on the way to the guy he bought it from and we will harvest the bellhousing and the brake assemblies from it. |Is there anything to watch out for.
4. his number is 3267, What year is it? Or where is a serial number list?
5. What should we watch out for on this tractor?
6. What is a good parts source for a tie rod end, paint, decals, etc.?
7. When we went for magneto parts they gave us the wrong parts, we disassembled the mag, took int he numbers and matched up the new parts. The magneto said it was a Fairbanks-Morse Type FMJ(If memory serves me correctly). Is this an aftermarket option or what? The stores book had it, but not as a stock magneto for the tractor. Where do we get a rotor and distributor cap? We installed new copper cored wires, plugs and points but could not get the cap.
8. We rebuilt the carb but don't know the proper way to adjust it? where do we find new floats, the old ones are a bit bent up.
9. The tractor came with a complete cultivator setup on it, How much is it worth? This will be a mowing tractor.
10. What a good place for turf tires? is there a trick to put trailer tires on the fronts or something that you guys do for mowing?
11. The clutch is really touchy(it sure does a nice wheely) and is at the end of the pedal travel. Can that be adjusted?

Thanks for any help you can offer. I am new to AC and really like the machine. The motor is in really good shape and runs strong now but we want to ease the starting a bit, hand cranking gets tired. Sorry for the long list, It was a long weekend. But at least she now runs. look forward to hear from you.

OK, I'll fix my error before the (good hearted) abuse starts. The timing marks appear in the left (driver's) side hole of the bellhousing, F for full running, C for TDC. Why the ignition is on one side nad the timing hole on the other is beyond me.

Watch the clutch and flywheel on electric start. There are two different clutches for the B, and the disc is different between electric start and crank on one of the styles (at least the TISCO replacements are).

For front tires, mine are Chevy Camero - any 5 on 4 1/2" pattern as long as the center hole is big enough.

I paid $75 for my cultivator set. It's a pain in the butt to put on but great for organic gardening.

Your serial number indicates a 1938, which has some collector value. Changing it to foot brakes and electric start will ruin the collector value!

I would reccomend that you purchase a donor tractor with the desired options and swap the engine into it. Restore the rear half, then when the engine gets tired restore it and you'll have a nice resto.

Timing is read in the right hole of the torque tube. F or Fire is running timing, T is TDC. THe flywheel only goes on one way (pattern drilled crank) so it's hard to get wrong.

The manual is a good thing to get, IT&T is more useful for rebuilding.

Kings books has reprints of owners and repair manuals. B operators is $5.95 and repair is 8.95, shipping is $2 per order. I think the quality is good. They are at PO Box 86, Radnor Ohio, 43066-0086. Get these two books and a lot of your questions will be answered. Keep a good boot over the shift lever, water can get into the transmission if it is cracked. Look for yellowish transmission oil. And change it anwyay, and don't forget the final drives, farmers almost never changed them.

I'm a bit new to this Allis thing also. JD man myself. I have a '38 "B". Where is a good place to get one of those boots for the transmission shifter? Thanks in advance.
