Grinding starter

My WD's starter acts like its not fully engaging the flywheel. It grinds once or twice, then starts fine. It does not do it every time. I,m hoping I did,nt mess up by putting a 12 volt battery in it like my old uncle Darrel suggested. He told me it would be fine as these starters are indestructable. I put it in a year ago and now I,m having this problem. Can anyone help me out here? How do I fix it? Should I stop taking my old Uncle Darrel's advice?

I would pull the starter off and check the ring gear for damaged teeth first, if it looks good then look to the starter and starter drive for your problem.

The starter on my machine(not a WD) does the same thing on occasion. The bendix on mine is fine; the problem is that the starter needs rebuilt. I crank mine on a 6v battery rated at 835 amps(real brute). These old machines were designed for 6v and will work fine on 6v if they are in good operating condition, electrically speaking. If the battery cables are older, you might consider replacing them. 6v systems need lots of amps to crank over. Battery cables can corrode from the inside out. Get some zero-gauge battery cables(or one-gauge, if you can't find zero-gauge). Anything else is too small. Make sure all of your electrical connections are shiny-clean and tight. If, after you try these suggestions, your starter still clashes with the flywheel, I'd say it's time for a starter rebuild. A 12v battery only puts off the inevitable rebuild; it doesn't fix the problem.

I doubt that you did anything to the starter. However, if your WD has distributor ignition and you didn't replace the 6v coil with a 12v coil(or put in a ballast resistor), you'd burn it up pretty quick.

Take the starter out and make sure the bendix is moving freely in and out. The grinding is probally it not moving out as the starter starts and it is not engaugeing the flywheel and it is grinding.
