Is it a WD or WD-45?? I can't tell.

I just picked up a WD -45(?) from an older farmer who said it was a 45 but it says WD only on the front metal. The serial # is 219943 so that leads me to believe it is a 1956 WD-45. My uncle has a tricycle type that is the same WD only on the front but serial number in the 204--- range.

It is a WD. Late model 1952, just prior to them changing over to the 45's. Wish it was a 45 - could use the HP, but no biggee.

I was told the Ser #'s on the block is one clue- Starts with a WD then it's a WD, starts with a 45 then it's a 45.. Definitely don't ever trust the seller or stickers, they may not be telling the truth, whether they mean to or not!

Here is the best way to figure out what you have.

Look at the serial number.

WD began at SN 7 in 1948, ended at 146606 in 1953

WD-45 began at 146607 in 1953, ended at 236958 in 1957

Assuming original equiptment-

All WDs have a plate on the engine to access pushrods.
All WD-45s have solid cast block.
All WD-45s have curved shifter.
All tractors with straight shifter are WD

SOME WDs have the different head & intake manifold, tranny & shifter. This was before the official change to WD-45 at sn146607

My neighbor has a WD with WD45 head & intake manifold, & different tranny. .it is a WD, has WD block, WD SN.

If someone thinks this is wrong, let me know.

Also the right side of the engine as you sit in the seat on a WD has a plate bolted on. Whereas the 45 does not.

From what you have told me, I can look at the Valve Cover ?? and if it is 4.5 inches it's a WD-45? Is that right??

What about the serial numbers. When I look up the serial numbers on this site it looks like they stop for a WD shortly after 137,000 or so. Did they stop production on them in 1953?

Another thing, What about the Carb? I saw in a manual I have that the Zenith carb wasn't used on a WD-45. Any take on that? Though we know it would be pretty easy to change carbs. There is also a number stamped on the side of the block that says LP ---- something or other, is it possible that this was a LP converted over to gas??

Not true in all cases, but to start I always look for curved shifter on 45's. Also higher valve cover (4.5 inches)than plain WD. Decals get changed a lot. Can't go by them.

You know Dan, you're right. I do recall seeing aWD with a curved shifter. May have replaced the transmission. The older farmer he mentioned may be referring to a WD45 kit.

heres something that a A/C dealer told me one time, he told me that you could tell the difference by the engine, the wd had a access panel on the left side of the engine, so you will see a panel with bolts, the wd45 is a solid cast block. let me know if this is bull if you find out different

They changed the transmission on WD's starting with #127008 in 1952 this was before they made the WD 45. They also had the curved shifter.

I bought a WD that supposedly has a '45 kit. I'm wondering if it has anything besides decals. What all is involved in this transformation? Is there any way to tell from the outside?

Yea, I've seen, and so have you I imagine, Sam, so many changed, pieced, and revised editions it's really hard to tell what the tractor is "totally." Could have a WD hood on it too and actually be a 45. 45's had more instruments in hood though, didn't they?

There are several ways to tell, but the easiest way is to look at the transmission shifter. If it's straight, it's a WD. If it's curved, it's a WD45. Good luck with your old tractor.

Sam, some guy corrected me sometime ago about shifters on WD's. Someone who really knew more than I, said that some of the last WD's had curved shifters on them. Wish my old '48 WD had a curved one. My back is bad enough that I have trouble pushing shifter up into 3rd gear. Don't use it much because of that..... use 2nd all the time.

Dan, I know what you mean about the 3rd gear. I don't know about the late WD's, maybe that's what I saw. I don't recall any more guages on the hood of 45's. By the way, I have a 48 or 50 WD. Been in the family since 69. Sat for about 10 years. I just fired it up last week. You just can't kill them old things.
