Think,I have found my problem with my WD and pops, After running for about 20 minutes(rough yet) the no.#1 spark plug is not at all warm, not sparking??? Change wire and anything else I could think of and nothing ,I think this has got to be my problem with rough running, what and all can cause this problem, magneto is also not original( International Harvester but,I think was working! so I don't need any more expense than I have too, it is also a 12 volt system?? with an alternator, can the magneto be the whole problem, why would it only be not sparking on only no#1 plug and not the others?? is there something that can be checked to figure this out?? I haven't a clue where to go from here, are all magnetos expensive?? if I need to totally change Mag to fix the problem what do I get and, hopefully just the Mag!! Help!! At least I think I can now fix something and it should run better??

Hey Jim,

Sounds to me like one of the valves is stuck open (probably the exhaust).

First thing you need to do is make sure the #1 plug is getting fire. You could have a worn point cam on the #1 side which isn't allowing that plug to fire (odd but not unheard of). Don't do this in full sun as the sparks are hard to see, best to wait for dim light rather than dark so you can still see what you are doing. Pull all the wires off the plugs and ground #2,3 and 4 so the engine won't catch unexpectedly. Put a spare plug on the #1 wire and ground the plug threads to the engine so you can see the spark gap (if you hold the plug to the engine you may want to wear rubber gloves ;-). Have someone crank the engine over a couple of times and look for the spark (you can do this on any of the others to see what the spark should look like.) It doesn't sound to me like this is where the trouble is but its a good place to start. If you aren't getting fire you may want to switch to an electronic ignition which saves you from having to replace the worn distributor.

Next thing is to check the compression on #1. If its present but low compared to the other cylinders you may be getting excessive blow-by and diluting your engine oil with gas. If it doesn't show any significant compression at all, pop the valve cover and look for a valve stuck open. Sometimes all the tractor needs is to be worked hard to "fix" a sticking valve. Other times you'll need to pop the head off and have a valve job done. In either case you should pop the valve cover to be sure something isn't bent or broke.

Good luck!

You could have a bad plug, bad wire, (try swapping wires around and see if the problem moves with the wire), the distributor cap could be cradked or you could have a bad connection in the cap or at the plug. How about doing a compression check to see if all cylinders are within a reasonable range. could be a stuck valve or something that is not letting that cylinder pull it's share.

Have new wires, new cap,new rotor, have swapped wires, have swapped wires on cap and turned it over opposite way, changed plugs 3 differant times, #1 plug is fouled with gas so it is getting gas, changed cap with another one, changed wires 2 times, someone told me that if the magneto spark is weak, and #1 is a little weaker than the other 3 that it may not be producing enough spark for #1 to do it's thing because it needs a stronger spark to get it done?????

Well it sounds like you have covered the spark department. I would move on to mechanical things that I and others have mentioned. Good luck, let us know how it goes.

Got it!!! A neighbor came over to see if he could help figure it out and he did!!, he noticed that the rotor was in the wrong position for plug no.#1 when it was suppose to spark. Apparently someone (me??) had somehow changed the gear position on the Magneto when putting in the new rotor, points, and cap. Runs great now,(so far) will know when I have more time and, the weather allows me to run it out in the hills for a longer period.

Basic question: Are you sure WD has magneto? Many WD's have distributor. Simple check. Four wires out of distribution cap: magneto makes spark. Five wires means distributor receives current from electrical system. Timing is adjusted by slightly rotating mag assembly on slotted bolts which hold it in place. Hang in there. Be sure you have good plugs too.
