If the manifold is leaking and not completely tight could it cause the tractor to idle fine but, at full gas cause it to pop and loose power?? Have changed everything including carb rebuild and it hasn't helped, cleaned gas line ,new plugs, cap, rotor, wires, bowl, screen???? Tried everything that I can think of,need help desparetely!!!!

Hey Jim,

(Didya get the remote hydraulic line yet?) When I first got my WD45 It would miss under a load. I too replaced all the electrical components from the plugs down to and including the dust cover over the points and condenser. I didn't think the points look bad enough to mess with so I "saved" a buck or two and just cleaned them. It still missed under a load and after sitting a bit between bushhogging season and hay feeding season got worse. It started missing as soon as it warmed up, load or no. I bought the carb rebuild kit but also got new points and condenser and put those on first since they were easy to get to. Brought the beast back to life with power to burn! I guess with the twelve volt conversion life is hard on the condenser. Next time I'm think of replacing the whole point set up with the electronic version. There are a couple of articles in the archive here explaining the process. (Then again a new condenser every year is pretty cheap.)

Twelve volt cars with points used to have a resistor or length of resistance wire to drop the voltage to the coil/points some to abut 9 I think. This was bypassed for starting for a better jolt to get things going and to make up for the draw of the starter on the electrical system. 55 Chevy's and that vintage had a resistor on the fire wall, may be still available, maybe this would help.

The tractor came to me with a resitor (held against the coil with a plastic wire strap) and although I haven't checked it out to see what rating it is, it looks like a typical firewall mounted ignition resistor. I'll let you know how long this new condensor lasts.

Dave, got the remote sometime last week, sorry for not letting you know, have just been so frustrated with it running so crummy that I've been preoccupied. My Neighbor came over to give another perspective and found the problem. When I changed the points ,rotor & cap ,I apparently somehow changed the gear setting on the magneto so that the rotor was in the wrong position when the no.#1 plug should have been fired. Runs great right now, until next time, so now back to the frills and cosmetics, where should I install the cd player ????? ?????

Glad it worked out (both the remote line and magneto). I'm surprised any of the cylinders fired at all if the mag rotor was so far off #1 wasn't hitting at all. No wonder it was popping.

As for the CD player, try on top of the battery box unless that interferes with the air conditioner outlet. Second choice would be on top of the right rear wheel fender (easier to change CDs that way). Just be sure the headphone cabling doesn't get drag down into the PTO. (Safety always comes first!) ;-)

If you have an intake manifold leak it will run fast but not slow, if you have much of an exhaust leak you will hear it and it won't matter much as to how it runs, slow or fast. I would agree, check the points and condenser, possibly have the magnito checked out on as test stand. Marks magnito in Norwich CT has repaired some magnitos for some of us in this area that have turned out well when a well known ignition shop in Providence failed. Let me know if you want their address.

Have you replaced the points & condensor recently? About a year ago my WD got to where it would start, but run rough. It would buck, snort, and act like it was not getting fuel. I would have sworn it was a carburetor problem, so I rebuilt it and tried all sorts of adjustments. Out of desperation, I replaced the points & condensor & that solved the problem.

My $0.02 worth....James

Jim, You might want to check the valve adjustment with todays gas quality and all. It could be you have one to tight.
