Wd-45 diesel compression

Can anyone tell what the compression on a wd-45 diesel sould be. I have one of these tractors and it has a new injector pump and the injectors have been gone through. If the tractor has not been running, you must crank and crank the engine will start to slowly out run the starter and then it will take off. The tractor runs very well after it has started. Also should there be a one way valve on the transfer pump to maintain a small amount of pressure for starting. Or is the gravity pressure from the fuel tank all that these tractors had.

I don't believe that the transfer pump retains any pressure for startups. The pump is just a set two small gears that are not high precision. I know that when bleeding the lines we add a little air pressure to the top of the tank with a airhose and can easily slowly push fuel past the transfer pump to the injection pump. My 45 Diesel starts nearly instantly, but everything is new or rebuilt. Is your transfer pump delivering enough pressure for startup? Mine runs about 13-14 lbs after it pops off. I also freed up all the intake breathing with more efficient filters and got rid of the intake heater since I live in the south ., maybe that helped mine... Last idea, could your air cells in the head be carboned up? Email me if you use yours for pulling. Good Luck.

I don't know what the pressure on a compression gauge should read, however, if I remember correctly, the compression ratio is 15.5 to 1. This is low for a diesel and I was always amazed how efficient those tractors were with that low compression ratio. If there is white smoke coming out of the exhaust while it is cranking, it is getting fuel. If this is the case, it may be the injection pump timing. If the timing is correct, then it's possible that the pump was not overhauled properly - since you said it runs good after starting, that probably is not the case. The other thing that comes to mind is how fast is the starter cranking it over. If it is cranking to slow, it will be slow to 'light off'. All of this is assuming that you are not talking about winter starting problems. That is another issue. They will start like that in cold weather (lots of white smoke before they light off). Hope this helps.

Don't know the compression but I have a D19D that is the same way starting. We also put new rings valves etc. and installed a coolant heater but didn't seem to help. I hope someone can help.
