WD radiator overflowing

My WD's engine temperature runs about 160 - 180 degrees F according to the indicator. It has a 6 or 7 psi radiator cap. The problem is the radiator overflows out the overflow tube. The overflow is present regardless of whether the engine is cold or warm. I have replaced the radiator cap(did not improve the situation). Thought maybe the headgasket was leaking and pressurizing the cooling system, so I replaced it also(still did not improve the situation).

Has anyone else had this problem? If so, what was required to remedy it?

I have an Allis WD. When I rebuilt mine I tried to cut corners and bought a radiator cap at a local discount store. I had the same problem you are describing. I found out the Radiator cap did not reach far enough into the neck to seal the radiator. Napa carries the proper cap. Hope you find the problem.

James,
sounds to me like your radiator is restricted. I assume it is a vertical flow system and what I think is that as the coolant flows from the motor when the thermostat opens it is not falling to the bottom of the radiator fast enough and the excess is being dumped...try backflushing and see if it helps Good Luck

I have a WD also. I assume these tractors have a thermostat. I would check it. Sounds like restriction is allowing flow only through system at start-up and then stopping it and causing the excess pressure. Hope you find the problem.

How much is overflowing? How much coolant did you put in? Should be at least 1"or more from the top. How's the lip on the inside that mates with the seal on the new cap? Any corrosion or dings on it?

One thing I forgot to mention in the original post. I am running the tractor without a thermostat - the water pump puts out a pretty large flow into the top of the radiator - could that be overpressuring the radiator? The radiator overflows quite a bit - If I run the tractor all day the coolant level will be down about a gallon - have to watch it close in hot weather when working it hard -seems like it looks for some type of equilibrium level. I usually fill it to to just cover the top plate - about one or one and a half inch below the top. the sealing surfaces between the radiator & cap are OK. I may take it to a radiator shop and have it flushed & flow tested. Thanks to all for the replies.....James
