Allis Chalmers made their own engines for the D17. The gas and LP engines were 226 cubic inch four cylinders. The diesel is a 262 cubic inch naturally aspirated six cylinder, similar to the one used in a D19, minus the turbo.

When the 170 replaced the D17 in mid-67, Allis continued to use the 226 gas engine but used a Perkins 236 four cylinder for the diesel. Eventually the 170 was replaced with the 175. At first, the 175 diesels used the 236 engine, too, but later the bore was increased to give it 248 cubic inches.
