This is a'33 Allis WC. It has been in the same area for 68 years and still rakes hay every summer. It's owned by an old friend named Smoky, he's 84 and still wrenching tractors. He got the name because always has time to talk. Some one on Tales that this looks like a '35. I'm just passing on the year as he told it.

If it is a '33 there are two telltales that make it easy to spot. The first is the flathead Waukesha engine. Spark plugs screw into the top of the head rather than the side. Second is a notch in one framerail (CRS prevents me from remembering which side) to clear part of the engine. The notch is about 8" long and is visible in the top flange of the rail. Of course, if the S/N is 28 or lower, that is a dead giveaway.

I'm no expert but I was told the '33 WC had a 4 spoke steering wheel.

If that's a 33, then I know a guy that'll pay good money to get it. But, I don't think it's a 33. The PTO didn't come out the bottom of the tranny like that till 35, and I think that's the 201 engine. Any 33 would have the Wawkishaw engine. And it'd have to have a serial number of 28 or less. Might be a 34, though. No lettering on the radiator tank. That'd be a good one to restor either way. They work just as good painted as beat on. Remember, they came from the factory looking nice. As for the year, I'm going with the rest and saying it's a 35. The serial number is on the rear of the differential, right in the middle, if you really want to know the year, post it and we can tell you. Either way, it's still nice to see one still running strong and looking that good.

It's a pleasure to see an old tractor that still works for a living and looks like it, too. When old Smoky goes (not too soon, I hope), I hope he finds a way to take the tractor with him; it would be a shame for some "collector" to get ahold of it, think it needs beautification, and make it end its years painted like a floozy and sitting idle at tractor shows and being ogled by old farts in golf carts. Antique tractors and machinery are happiest when they are at work.

WSF, I have to agree with you. There is a certain beauty in the natural "patina" acquired over years of real use. There's a family in my area that has several old 20s vintage cars that they take to the local car shows. Each one looks pretty much like it's straight from "The Grapes of Wrath", but they're all in good mechanical shape. They don't win any prizes at the shows, but people really do enjoy looking at them.
