I have a C, tractor #C78798,(1949, I think) engine #BB or BE548, (not sure about the second letter, there's a bell housing boss that covers part of it). Do these numbers sound right? Anybody care to reccomend their favorite service manual (and source) for this tractor. Also, I've been told to add a lead substitute to the fuel. I don't see any posts on the subject so any comments would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Sounds like it had an engine swap in its past. The BE engine numbers were the engine put on B's. The C's had CE stamped on them. That was the only difference in the blocks. What are the last two numbers of the arched casting number in the center of the engine just under the head on the right side? Check the photo.

I would get an Allis Chalmers operating instructions maintance and parts illustrations manual.

Unless your going to work the tractor 10 hours a day I wouldn't worry about the additives in the fuel.

All the B's, C's and some of the CA's have the AM-2916-?? All of the 1938's have the - 10 The 1939 I have has a - 11 The 1940 B that I have has a - 12. I am not sure at what point in a year they changed the last two numbers. I do have an engine block out here with a - 36 but it is a CA block.

That makes sense. My 1941 B has a -13.

Hey Dick, I noticed one of the casting marks in the photo was a letter "C" with an "L" through it. Do you(or anyone else) know what that stands for??

I just purchased what I was told was a 1943 B, but upon checking the serial number, it was C28249 - can you please tell me what year this is? The two web sites I checked gave conflicting answers - 1943 or 1944. The arched nymber above the center freeze plug is 2916-20. Also I cannot locate the engine number. I have looked in the area it should be behind the air filter (your photos were a great help there!) Any ideas out there? Thanks in advance.

The C-L combo is used in engineering to designate a center line but darned if I can identify any center line features related to it. I wonder if it relates to the casting location? Or the casting company? Did they have their own casting facility and was it inherited from the Chalmers side?

Relative to the BE / CE, I have seen numerous B's with CE blocks, but never a C with a BE block. I thought the BE's were the small cube (116) and the CE's were the 125 CID. Two of the last 3 B's I looked at had CE blocks. Of course, it could be that they were repowered with motors from the C's (many people preferred the B's with the wide front and narrow rear tread to the C's).THe third had a CR stamped block - I assumed this was a factory replacement but maybe I misread it and it's a CA block?

This is a CA block. Notice the casting design just ahead of the dipstick location and the CE stamp on the second picture.

This is where they stamped the engine numbers on the early B's.

Kim, i should have double checked the serail numbers first. I thin they did make aobut 80,000 model "C" so you probably do have one of the last ones. They built up to 1950. Still think the "B" on th engine might mean things have been switched in the past?? Others may be able to prove this right or wrong.

Kim, the eingine number starting with a "B" would make one think it came from a model B. The tractor serial number by the shift lever , of 78,000 would make one think it was a "B" also, about year 1947?. I dont think they made 78,000 model "C". The serial number by the shift lever should also start with a "B". If the letter is a C followed by 78xxx im not sure what happened.
