My old B has been a little hard to start lately, and kind of acts like the timing is too far advanced. Timing checks right on with a light. I pulled the distributor cap thinking I had a stuck advance mechanism. Advance seems quite free, but it doesn't spring back positively when I release it. Should it return from spring tension when the rotor is advanced manually? Could I have broken spring? How hard is it to replace? Let me know what you think. Thanks, Paul

Yes it should spring back freely. Perhaps you
are getting some binding at the top of the dist. shaft. Remove your points plate & you can inspect the components of the advance. Static timing should be right on the "CENTER" mark. Bill
