My WD has the original 6 volt system and I have a couple of questions.
1- How do you know if the generator is functioning properly? (I have no lights hooked up and I am not sure the ammeter works)

2-When I disconnect the ground cable from the battery, the engine dies. What does this mean?

3-I have been told I need to "polarize" the system. Do I? If so, How?

irst you need a good voltmeter or ammeter connected up.
--ground the field terminal on the generator and see if it goes to full charge. If that works your light swith- dash sheetmetal is not grounded good.
--if still no charge, touch the contacts together on the cutout relay on top of the generator. This conntects the battery thru the ammeter straight to the "A" termnal on the generator. If that works then the cutout relay is bad
--If no charge after doing the above, have the generator tested.

Just did the same thing last night on my '52 WD except it has a magneto. I don't use the battery for ignition. Your ammeter should be showing a slight discharge, maybe a minus 1 or 2 amps when the engine is running and the generator is not putting out amperage. I jumped around the points on top of the generator and it put out +10 amps on the meter on the dash. I'll have to buy a new point assembly. One other thing I noticed is that ALL the terminals must be real clean. This is extremely important with a six volt system. I'll rewire my whole machine eventually because there's not that much to it.

You will need either an amp guage or a volt guage to tell if your system is charging. The original ammeter should show a discharge if you turn on the ign switch and the dist points are closed (this is without the eng running) If it does show
a discharge then the meter is likely ok. Remember the points have to be closed to tell this. When
you disconnect the ground you are interupting both the ign & the charge circuit so this doesn't tell you much. If original your system will have a simple cut out mounted on top of the gen. Remove the cover & push the cutout points closed manually to restore the residual magnetism to the gen. To charge, the instrument panel has to be well grounded to the battery box.
